pirate more digital media (movies, games, music, software) than you do now, or at least be more compelled to do so? Assume that the tax was applied to damn-near everything, and there would be almost no way to avoid it short of buying used from individuals on Craigslist.

No.

Because we have it already in Canada.

I have never thought to myself 'i'm not going to buy this because of GST' though. The premise of not buying something with that logic is weird.

tax almost never goes in to my purchasing decisions, so no.

unless the tax was so severe that it somehow eclipsed a years worth of income tax if you purchased a significant amount of stuff, then maybe? still probably not.

no, I don't pirate.

plus I go out of my way to pay use tax on anything that I buy online that doesn't charge me sales tax, like you are supposed to do. I'd just prefer amazon and everywhere would charge me a sales tax so I wouldn't have to bother with use tax.

No income tax, but more sales tax? That would be a backbreaker to the poor, and encourage the rich to hoard even more.

what is use tax? if something online doesn't charge you sales tax, you owe an equivalent amount of use tax to your state, unless your state doesn't have sales tax or something.

When I lived in New York, Amazon did charge sales tax, as did Steam/Xbox/PSN/Nintendo online stores. So I always paid $0 on use tax because **** Bloomberg and his extortionist tactics.

But when I moved to Massachusetts, I started paying use tax (the average, "I don't want to itemize my purchases" rate) because Amazon doesn't charge sales tax here. Some (not all) other online retailers still do charge sales tax, but I buy so much from Amazon that the average rate is lower than just what I should be paying from tax there.

Nope wouldn't affect any such decisions at all

It would be an awful idea for other reasons though. Such a tax would be regressive as hell.

Yeah because rich people miss that 30% of their income way more than poor people do, right?

Any national sales tax should only apply to spending over a certain annual amount and should make exempt certain products (like groceries and other essentials). The tough part of that is how do you keep track of that? Itemize every purchase?

I pay tax on Amazon products because NY, so this was never a problem.

I don't pirate much anyway, and this wouldn't likely change my mind either.

and that was exactly what you were supposed to do. if a site charges sales tax, then no use tax is owed.

As someone who's lived sales tax free my entire life, a national sales tax makes me want to vomit, then kill myself in that vomit. Like I feel as though the upcoming movie or even an all new season of 24 could revolve solely around some terrorist organization pulling strings to implement a national sales tax, and it would be the most gripping, emotional thing I'd ever watch.
