I've been playing for about a year and a third now, so I'd like to think I've gotten decent. However, for the first 7 or 8 months of playing I just never owned a pick. So I've strummed chords with the nail of my second finger.
Since getting a pick, I don't really like the sound it makes. Perhaps it's because I don't know how to use it properly, but I definitely prefer the low bassy sounds of using my finger nails.
Should I put some effort into using a pick, or is not using one ever totally acceptable? For the record I do any thing that's not just strumming with my fingers too.
So, are we talking acoustic or electric? If acoustic, sure that makes sense. Though you'll get callouses on your fingers. If electric, well I'd say you gotta pick.

It's fine if you're just playing chords (or anything finger picked of course.) As you play more difficult songs, depending on what they are, some stuff will be really hard to play with just your fingernail because you need to use up and down strokes.
I'd highly reccomend taking the time to get used to and learn the pick before you decide which you like more. Both are valid, even on electric - fingerstyle can create some great sounds, and you can even do the mix. There is no right way to play, really.
