-2P mode is vastly inferior. You have to unlock the characters and there aren't as many stages
-Stages look mildly different. Prison Lane is browner, Eternal Engine is greener, and Sky Rail has an entire chunk missing on the left side
-They used a shading technique to make the characters appear black on the bottom in darker places. This was removed in the GC version.
-Several sound edits were fixed in the GC version because characters got cut-off when a cutscene ended
-In Cannon's Core, Knuckles has a part where he swims down a tunnel and has to avoid heat rays. Getting hit by one makes it very unlikely you'll get those rings back. And you're drowning. So when you try to get an air bubble, it brings him down into a pit of acid, killing him. They actually had to put a block there in the GC version. This will explain why I don't remember getting so pissed off the first time I played it
I'm not trying to be a DC-version basher since they're mostly the same game, but I'm glad Sega took some time to improve the game in a few places, notably the very last one since it flung me into a burning rage. I don't see why GameSpot flipped an 8.6 into a 6.8 within a year when Sega improved the game. I know it's not super-great, but it was very fun and deserves at least a 7.5.
It just felt nice finally playing Sonic on a Sega system for the first time in years.
