Going to the battery in device manager says its fine/I don't wanna buy a new battery keeps me trying things but so far no good. I know it's not the charger now because i just got a new one. I thought the problem was my old charger as it was getting close to death (and it was because it exploded)

So uh. Help.

My old laptop had a problem where the port shifted and I had to get it at just the right angle for it to charge and eventually not at all. So maybe that...

I've had a problem with the battery charging software on my actual computer messing up and not charging correctly, but it didn't stop charging completely

Was going to say this. and to replace it also costs replacing the motherboard

Yeah, I have no idea if its a battery problem, a socket problem or a motherboard problem.

I'm fairly sure its not a charger problem though, some of the googling I've done says that Dell has a thing that won't let 3rd party chargers charge a laptop, but I've had two other 3rd party chargers work before this one (like the one that worked fine before suddenly the problem came up and then 4 days later it exploded)

Did you by chance not use the laptop for a few months? I did that and apparently the battery got so low that it was unable to be charged normally.

Nope, just sort of happened, of course it happened right after i used it off the charger so my battery now only has a 5% charge on it after unplugging it to try to fix it. It had a 15% charge when i plugged it back in.

This can be caused by your BIOS setup being screwed up.
That can be usually fixed by hitting f2 when starting up and finding the utility option and just BSing your way from there.
There's also the possibility of a recent update or installed program flat-out screwing it up. At which point, you should go to the support site for whoever made your laptop, enter your exact model, and you should be able to download a BIOS setup program for it. Make sure you choose the right OS. Like, if it says it's for Vista and you use W7, that's no good. But that's crazy stuff I'd hire a nerd to do for me so I could blame him if it screws things up more.

Me and my brother both had Dell laptops and between the two of us we had three chargers break in less than 3 years. When our chargers were broken we had the exact same problem as you -- the charger would provide power but would not charge the battery.

But considering you just replaced the charger... not really sure what's going on. Find a friend with a Dell laptop and see how your charger(s) work on their computer?

Edit: I think there was a case where my brother bought a cheap adapter and it ended up not working, so just because it's new doesn't mean it will work necessarily... I encourage you to try another person's charger or have them try yours on their computer.

If it won't charge I usually turn the computer off, remove the battery, turn the computer on, turn it off, put the battery back in, and turn it on. I'm not sure all the steps are needed, but something like that.

I did this already, but I might try again.

Had it happen before a few times. Usually a motherboard issue.

thing didn't work

how expensive of a fix is it? I can handle a small repair fee but I can't afford a new laptop at this moment

Absolutely a broken AC adapter.

I thought it was my battery for a while.

Tried a friends charger, worked like magic.

My laptop is having really odd battery issues as well. 50% of the time that it says it's plugged in and at full power, it isn't actually plugged in and it goes 'oh wait I haven't been charging for an hour now lol' and shows what it actually is at about 10%, which for my six year old laptop means it has about twenty seconds before turning itself off.

To fix this, I literally have to inch the charger a millimeter to the right or to the left and it suddenly plugs in and starts charging. On the one hand, I'm impressed the thing still works since I got it in 2006 and use it constantly. On the other hand, it's so old that I don't think I could even buy spare parts for it. It'll be a sad day when it dies.

This is the most helpful post in the topic, I know.

I just got a new adapter though! I guess to figure it out I'm gonna have to find someone with a similar laptop to me and experiment with their charger and battery

This is almost always a broken adapter or broken battery. It could also be a motherboard issue or a broken port. Those are the big four. Looks like you need to get a battery.

My laptop has been having trouble keeping a charge, and the cord is extremely loose in the back. Looking it up, I found that the problem was with the DC Jack (a new power cord did nothing to help it.)

now my battery cannot be recognized, but that's probably because the power got too low. Or maybe hopefully it is a battery problem!
