Could be a problem with the charger, not the laptop. I remember my old laptop having the same problem a few years back, and the problem was the charger.
I'm thinking charger too cause of a message i get when i plug it in, but why wouldthe charger keep power into it but not charge it?

I just had to fix someone's Sony Vaio for this reason, and it wasn't the battery's fault. I just had to boot up without the battery in, go into the Device Manager, delete the battery from the device list, and then reboot with the battery in.
Not saying you should try this (I have no idea if it voids the warranty or anything of the sort) but I would suggest doing a little research before buying a new battery.
