It's mostly because FFV wasn't released in America originally, so it didn't get to have the same exposure to the young audience that gushes over FF"II" and "III"

V being the worst FF is a perfectly valid opinion!
No, FFV being the worst SNES FF is a valid opinion. Go beyond that and you're dealing with FF2 (which isn't as terrible as people think, but come on) and the MMOs, plus whichever of XII and XIII you hate more.
From: XIII_rocks | #066 Oh come on the whole series is the most

I'm pretty sure the fact that you can't come up with something better than that says more about you than it does about the series...!

"Stay with me until the end. Please." "Not until the end. Always."
I haven't played any of them past PS1 yet, but I really like 5's system. It's extremely freeform, and so I'd rank it pretty clearly above the well-designed but restrictive system of IV. I wish I'd gone with the GBA version, though... The fan translation is a bit literal.

Oh there's plenty of reasons beyond that. The gameplay being a big one.
But that topic summed up a lot of my problems with more or less the entire genre, not just FF

FFV is awesome because its got that Final Fantasy feeling without the cliches people love to complain about.
Zontian posted... Though I am worried about the whole job system being really complicated. I set Butts to Knight, Reina as White Mage, the old guy as Black Mage, and the pirate as Thief... Just because those seem most appropriate. I don't know what to do beyond that.
If it helps, ignore the four heroes for now and think of the jobs as the characters. All your powers come from the jobs. The characters are for customising later on.
Characters have four commands in battle (Attack/Job Ability/Free Slot/Item). Jobs level up with AP. Leveling up a job unlocks an ability related to that job. Choose any one of these abilities for the Free Slot. The Job Ability slot is fixed depending on what job you currently have.
Recommended early-game example: get one or two levels in White Mage, then switch that character to another job and put the earned command (White) in the Free Slot. Your non-mage can now heal!
And that's the very tip of the Job System iceberg. Not the bit you see above water, I mean, just the point at the very top.
