I think the three of them together represent a high point for the series, wasn't as good before or after. It's probably 5 > 4 > Zero and 5 is a top 10 game.

I hear good things about the original version of 3, but apparently localization murdered the story.

Also, music. First Flight, Zero, and The Unsung War never get old, and Journey Home is pretty nice too.

I have played and finished all of those. As well as 6 and X, and I've got 2 and 3 (midway through 2, probably not going to play 3, I just bought it for 49p to round out the collection. Still waiting on Project Nemo to translate the Japanese version).

5 is definitely my favourite, and one of my favourite games ever. I played the series out of order, so to me 4 felt a bit disappointing given the 'loss' of features introduced in 5 (mainly wingmen). Still a great game though.

I'm relieved that Namco seem to have gone back to Strangereal after all following AH- Cross Rumble being a remake of AC2, and there's a new mobile phone game set in Nordennavic. Fingers crossed the next full console game drops all the 'innovations' of AH completely. And is a remake of Electrosphere with the Japanese plot intact.
