It is amazing how far ahead they have planned things out. There's the Beetlejuice thing, of course, but they sprinkle in supporting characters weeks and weeks in the background before their episodes come around. Fat Neil is in the background of like 4 episodes before the D&D episode, for example. There is so much foreshadowing of things that happen later that you would never even pick up on the first time. It's so dense.
Actually, Beetlejuice was not planned that far in advance. They originally were going to mention it in "Competitive Ecology" (3x03) and Megan Ganz (writer of "Cooperative Calligraphy" aka the bottle episode) mentioned to Dan Harmon that they need to be careful because they had brought up Beetlejuice twice now. Then Dan Harmon went back and realized it was actually the third time, so they moved it to the Halloween episode so that they could make that joke.
It's still the writers being awesome at continuity and background jokes, though.

From: Mershaaay | #004 When does it come back on? Do we know yet?
Dan Harmon said he was confident it would be sometime in March. We do know for sure from NBC that it will be "sometime in the Spring" now, so that makes sense.

Given that The Firm was beaten in the ratings by programs on ABC, CBS, FOX, MTV, TNT, TBS and Univision on Thursday at 10, I'm guessing it won't be long

That might not be planning on their part. They have to have extra characters in the background regardless, so when they decide they need an extra character for an episode they just pick one from the background and bring him/her to the foreground.
I mean it's quite possible they do actually plan that far in advance, but it would be quite easy for that kind of stuff to just fall into place as well.

you can't just snatch an extra out of the background and give them a script
