obviously because of Nostalgia

but let me elaborate on that

there might be two things as to why, so let me break it down

heres some Punny backstory. its sad. Whether it be tear jerker sad or Pathetic sad, is up to you

so yea, yall know I was poor as s*** back in the day, hell, STILL to this day pretty much. Despite this, I LOVED arcades. It was seriously heaven for my little dumbass child self. Its one of the gigantic reasons why I love fighting games and beat em ups to this day (That and its the happiest memories I have spending with my family and my older brother, but I digress), those were the genres that COVERED arcades.

HOWEVER, to play these games, you need the monies. so guess what me and my lil bro used to do? We would go to a cabinet, wait til a demonstration happened, we would PRETEND to play when the CPU characters start duking it out, and whoever had the most life, or dished out the most attacks, would win and we would do this like two out of three times and declare a winner.

yea >_>

imagine how much we'd s*** ourselves whenever we'd get a dollar and would ACTUALLY be able to control the characters

where am I going with this?

reason 1

Free play
Being able to play however much I want on games I only had a limited few tries back in the day is basically healing my frustrations of not being able to play them much back then.
:D
Seriously, its pretty much giving the middle finger to the INSERT COIN text, which was my worst enemy when it came to games, NOT the enemy characters themselves. Man, I can't imagine how happy my kid self would be if he knew this would be possible one day. I mean, it WAS possible that some SNES ports of arcade games had unlimited contines, but more often than not, some of them DID have limited continues. But still
Man, Technology is great sometimes. Games that were created to be ran on big cabinets the size of fridges are now being distributed DIGITALLY. its seriously something from a sci fi show.

now let me explain something
we eventually got a Super Nintendo. I'm not sure HOW exactly. I think it might've been given to my dad and he just wrapped it up and gave it to us for Christmas. lol OH DAD
but anyways, our library sucked balls. It had mario and all stars of course, but that was it. like, once or twice a year, my parents would buy us a game, but it would be a bargain bin game. AKA a game that sold horribly and was on clearance to make room for kick ass games like other Mario titles. we loved our games nevertheless. Every once in a blue moon inbetween those purchases, my dad would allow me and my bro to RENT a game. We would rent our favs, such as Street Fighter, Slam masters, and TMNT Turtles in Time, as well as other classics, such as Super Mario RPG, YI, and various others.
Now there was a problem, not EVERY arcade game got a port. and on top of that, the ports weren't perfect either (Though this worked to the advantage of TiT(hehe tit)). We were PISSED The Xmen arcade game, the Simpsons game, the arcade version of Battletoads, and the Dungeons and Dragons game were never ported. I remember every time we would go to rent a game, I looked for these games first.

Reason 2

Its now possible to play these exclusive games on your console. You guys have no idea how much I was jumping for joy when Xmen was ported. well, some of you do. And the possibilities are endless now. We can finally get Battletoads too, an arcade perfect Killer Instinct, a 4 player Slam Masters DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS. etc
these games were sacred, especially if they were removed from the arcades, and they were after awhile when arcades were declining
Its just so satisfying when a silly little want from your childhood gets fulfilled during your adulthood and you can appreciate it much more

so yea, just my thoughts.
any thoughts of your own?

oh damn me and my bro weren't the only ones who did this?

And what do you know, beat em ups are my most favorite genre now too

It's probably because one of my fondest gaming memories is me my brother and my dad all going to Burger King where they had a TMNT cabinet and playing that all together. At home we just had the NES which obviously could only play 2 at a time so that cabinet which we all could play simultaneously was a HUGE f***ing deal for me

Our other favorite arcade game (back when malls actually had arcades) was Aero Fighters but for some reason I've never really gotten back into the vertical shmups that much

I definitely understand where you're coming from. When I was a kid arcades were like a thing of LEGEND for me. Since we lived in a really small town there was no arcade, not even like a '2 cabinets at the local bowling alley' type deal in my town or even in any of the next towns over in any direction. Once in, like, a blue moon we would go on a trip to a bigger city for like whatever reason (not even a big city like Boston, just a bigger one than where we lived) and I was always amazed at the arcades they'd have in the malls there (we didn't even have a mall in my town or anywhere within like an hour and half drive). Even though we were also pretty poor and I didn't even get to play many (or sometimes ANY) games when we went on trips like this, I still thought arcades were awesome.

Another genre of games Id like to see be ported in some way is the Rail shooters like Jurassic Park and what not.

But I pretty much agree with everything you said. We were so poor that renting games was a huge deal. And the only way to beat an RPG was to just continuously re-rent over and over, which was impossible because people kept reserving them.

Except Super Metroid and the Mega Man X games. Holy **** did we love those.

I was really disappointed at the suck-i-tude of the Turtles in Time remake. Wow did they just butcher it completely.
