I am writing you regarding H.R.3261, more commonly referred to as SOPA, as well as its sister legislation, PIPA. These bills are little more than draconian attempts to prevent internet enterprise, slow our natural economic progression, and limit free speech. SOPA and PIPA's major proponents are the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. These entities have spent millions of dollars to create support for this bill, when they should've been spending money to adapt to a new economic environment, with new definitions of elements like intellectual property. Meanwhile, companies such as google, AOL, twitter, and eBay oppose SOPA to the point of orchestrating today as an internet blackout in protest. Unlike the supporters of the bill, companies like google have adapted to an internet marketplace and demonstrated that our economy must evolve to thrive in different ways. The failing of industries who refuse to adapt to the times is not the stuff with which good legislation is made. And neither is blatantly infringing the First Amendment, which clearly states:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
I don't even believe that the supporters of these so called 'anti-piracy acts' poses even an elementary understanding of how communications technology has evolved in the past 20 years. Unlike them, I hope that your vote will be informed. Included below are a few links that can describe the workings of SOPA and PIPA better than I am capable of doing.
