Just watched it. I have no words beyond the obvious comment about him having used Molly to fake death.

Also season 3 has been commissioned already so there's that.

BUT NOW WE GOTTA WAIT A YEAR UNTIL THE COMEBACK.

Love how they hinted at Morgan being the sniper. And how they sort of took a few shots at "7% solution." He'll probably play a huge role in the comeback. Great, great episode.

Wonder how they are going to play Moran in Series 3. He didn't have much development in the original canon besides being Holmes #2 enemy and a godly sniper. His backstory should give him enough personality though. Wonder what direction they are going to take him.

Amazing but it kind of bothered me that the general public (as well as the police) seem to think that he was a fraud. The Moriarty stuff is questionable but... What about all the clients he helped or the criminals he helped capture? Surely no one can think that he faked all of that...

You have to realize that a man as brilliant as Sherlock Holmes actually existing would be something that would need to be observed closely. People are too willing to believe something is fake if it allows them more comfort. As Moriarty states, people are so ordinary. They don't understand how he and Holmes think, and if you do not understand you have to reason it away somehow. All Moriarty needed to do is provide a few small pieces to allow the dominoes to begin and then sit back and watch as the people played to his tune.

They are probably going to find out that Holmes isn't a fraud after he comes back from the dead. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a mini cult dedicated to him after that happens. The plot was well executed, but "the public hates Holmes" would get old really fast so I hope they don't try to stretch it beyond the first episode next season.

Remember the favor he asked of Molly? And how she works in a morgue? Yeah. He probably switches places with the cadaver while Watson was knocked to the ground by the guy on the bicycle. The crowd/paramedics were probably also his homeless network allies or w/e.

The issue with switching cadavers while Watson wasn't looking is that 1)He couldn't expect Moriarty to kill himself and 2)While he could fool Watson by changing cadavers since he was distracted, he probably couldn't fool the snipers.

Not sure how much he anticipated regarding Moriarty but he could've easily switch places with the body while the "crowd" surrounded him. The sniper wouldn't be able to tell from the angle he was at.

That episode was amazing.

I have a question too. Why did he have to fool Watson? I guess because the sniper was watching and if he didn't look upset the sniper wouldn't have bought it?

Also whilst he fell he was kinda flailing in midair. A dead body could not have done that.

But yeh, obvs something to do with Molly.

Going from the canon answer:

Holmes faked his death in "The Final Problem" because there were too many dangerous people after his life(including Moran, the sniper) and he thought that Watson wasn't good enough of an actor to pretend that Sherlock was dead, which could be dangerous for his plans. And in the BBC series, it would be dangerous for Watson as well. He came back two years later(if I recall correctly) once he had taken down the entire Moriarty gang saved for Moran, whom he then took down together with Watson and Lestrade.

No idea how much the BBC series is going to change the canon reason though, so who knows?
