7. Fair To Midland Arrows & Anchors
Genre: Alternative Metal/Prog Key Songs: "Musical Chairs" "Short Haired Tornado" "Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow" Fair to Midland is one of those bands that manages to break through the barrier of their contemporary genre. I normally don't like bands that sound like this, at all. But their songwriting is so incredibly tight and such a breath of fresh air in the prog/alternative metal genre that I simply don't care that their climaxes can sound corny, or their guitar riffs too metallic. It just works despite its flaws, which is the indication of a good band for me. I have come to the conclusion that Arrows & Anchors may be better than their incredible major debut Fables From A Mayfly. There were a few songs on Fables From A Mayfly that felt unpolished, even if they were still good. There are no rough gems on this record, only great songs. Despite still maintaining the same sound, they sound more self assured. And with that self assurance also come more daring melodies, progressing into even more bombastic choruses and harder hitting guitarwork. Let's not forget Darroh's incredibly varied but powerful vocals. This band is not for everyone, hell, most if not all of iconsience will simply not care for this band or even hate them. But I love it. And I'm sure some other people will too. -- http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad250/baasaysthelamb/gifs%20and%20reaction%20imgs/jonhammhypnotize_gif.gif ... Copied to Clipboard!

4. Frank Ocean Thinking About You
video version: http://vimeo.com/28366669 demo version: http://www.musicplace.nl/2011/07/28/frank-ocean-thinking-about-you/ On the surface you'd suspect this song would bomb hard: A synthy R&B ballad with a falsetto chorus that pretty much makes girls cream their pants. This is also known as the average rock fan's worst nightmare. There's only so much sugar a person can take before he decides that he might not want diabetes. I am well on my way to getting musical diabetes, I think. Luckily, Frank Ocean is a songwriter who can break that barrier of candy coating, and he makes a contemporary R&B song sound real. He has your 'typical' smooth voice but he also has a unique tone that sets him aside from the usual black guy on helium. There's only a few times he even dares to sing in falsetto, and this song is one of those times. And it is by no means a bad thing: It's executed perfectly here. I do have to say that I prefer the more toned down, intimate original demo compared to the video version. It's not that much different, it just takes away the robotic backing vocals that come in from the second chorus and on. If 2012 isn't the year of Odd Future, it definitely is THE breakthrough year for at least one of them, and this is him. -- http://img.imgcake.com/tyler1gifuh.gif ... Copied to Clipboard!
