looks nice. what advantages does this have over say...browsing youtube for music or other internet related methods of finding music?

like, even without factoring piracy into the equation, why should i spotify when i could google?

omg where do I even start?

It's just so convenient. It literally has almost every song you could possibly want and you don't have to search through videos- it's all right there. It sorts things by album, years, artists- it has an AMAZING radio system that has introduced me to so much music I love in just the course of a WEEK- you can build playlists, have them on your profile page, share them- ugh, it's just so amazing.

Not to mention if you have an iPhone you can pay each much to be able to do all of this on your PHONE. Living in a city, this has been a huge huge plus for me.

I just love it oh so much. It is definitely one of my favorite things to come out of 2011.

Because you can CHOOSE what you want to listen to! You're not limited to skipping songs or any of that crap. You can be like "I want to listen to this" and BOOM- listen to it. Then you can be like, "yknow what, I want that on a playlist" and BOOM- put it on a playlist. And then just do this with more and more songs and have awesome playlists and it's all for free and UGHGHGHGHGH I LOVE IT.

I think Facebook is required to Spotify now, but I'm pretty sure you can limit it. A lot of people share what they're listening to on Facebook, but you can choose not to. I know I don't.

I guess that sucks. I joined before they had that requirement so I didn't have to attach my Facebook. But I think I did anyway and literally it has had like no effect. Regardless, the service is truly impeccable and knowing how great it is now, I'd still join even with the Facebook requirement. I don't see it having any impact on Spotify at all.

Yeah it really is not that big of a deal at all. The only thing I've seen is that people on your Facebook can see your published playlists and everything but you can choose not to publish them for the public. I have been recently because I've been making some awesome playlists, but that's just me.

ok, so this thing does have a private mode, though it really doesn't seem like it wants you to use it...

still feels icky but there are undoubtedly worse things...

now to find this radio function...

Omega all you have to do is click your name in the top right and press 'Private Session'. Simple, no?

But I don't mind being "public" with the music I'm listening to (most of it!), I just need to know what it means to 'Publish' something. Like I already threw a few hours of crap into the Queue so I'm well on my way, but is that publishing? Or do I have to make and save a playlist? Or do something else entirely? What quantifies being 'enough' of an action for other people to see me do it is what I need to know.

It doesn't matter for probably 70-90% of the stuff listen to, but I'd just as soon not have my pastor see "FD is listening to Bonfire by Childish Gambino" if it is avoidable -_-

what does publish mean?

You can add songs to playlists you create and if you want others to be able to see your playlists you can "Publish" them to be made public. Then anyone searching you on Spotify can listen to your playlists and even subscribe to them. But, again, this is optional.

now to find this radio function...

It's on the left side. You listen to the radio based on an artist, like on Pandora. I like to star my favorite songs to listen to later (starring songs creates its own playlist) and then listen to albums of artists I star later as well.

huzzah for using the radio to discover a band i already had stuff by on my computer but had forgotten about. a minor success i guess...

searching a few niche genres i listen to and i am seeing this has some definite limitations. like, i am trying to make a station based on general styles of music and it is not giving me anything beyond an artist or track name to work with. like...if i knew artist names in said style i wouldn't need to start with the style now would i >_<

All I know is that it drops a 30 second commercial every 4-5 songs and when I go to the program page there are a million pop-up ads that take a few seconds to disappear if I want to change songs. Until they get rid of that without making me pay, there's no way I'll use it.

this program is a bit on the annoying side. i guess it is great as long as you don't dive too far down with music tastes...

like, i want to find some more flamenco music, but lacking a genre option for searching, this only brings up artists or songs with flamenco in the name. same with chiptunes.

though, nice success with searching for meditation stuff. if there were a way to sort by track length or more specific criteria it would be nicer, but still pretty good to just have access to...

That's not so bad.

Finally found this which seems to say that as well:
https://www.spotify.com/us/blog/archives/2011/09/27/what-to-share/

Although I'm confused on something new. on that link I just posted on the bottom right it has a box for "Recent Activity" and shows some songs that people I know have listened to.

But I don't see a box like that anywhere on facebook itself, only on this one page on spotify.com

I actually wouldn't mind to have that box somewhere else but I don't know how to find it =P

If you find a good flamenco band, I'd use that band to create a radio station and see what type of music it recommends for you.

Which is still not as good as being able to make a radio station by Genre.

I just opened up lastfm and started listening to "Swedish Techno" Radio in a few seconds.

In Spotify I have to listen to "Basshunter Radio" which starts to give me much more varied songs, not all swedish techno.

So far I like Spotify and I think I'm going to keep using it, but I can see what it's very annoying to not be able to radio by genre.

I should be able to listen to "80s Radio" instead of "Journey Radio". Well 80s is a bad example because they have an 80s option, but thats one of the 25 or so options they do have and there are plenty of other types of music.

But I'm the kind of person who enjoys listening to a CD straight through and so its nice to be able to do that. The 30 second commercials every 5 seconds are worth the convenience.

Yeah last FM is really great about very genre specific radio. You want German punk? If there are songs out there with both "German" and "Punk" tags you've got them. You can be as specific or as vague as you want.

And then when you Like or Dislike the songs that it gives to you it further refines what it sends within that genre. So you might like a really specific genre, but after awhile it will stop playing a certain artist even if they are popular in the genre if you dislike their songs enough.

But as for myself being able to specifically choose the songs/CDs I'm listening to is better than a more capable "radio".

This. Also if you pay you get the highest quality files. This is my favorite iPhone app ever, and it's not even close. Don't need cd's in my car, and I don't need to always change what music I have on my iPhone. Just plug it into my car and I have everything. Also, I listen to music constantly while I'm working, so anywhere from 4-10 hours a day, and the app doesn't really do much to your battery life. If you don't have this, and you're someone like me who would benefit from it greatly, you're a fool!
