Maybe I'll just ask here for some direction...

Basically, my computer had some malware on it. I'm pretty sure it's completely removed, since no virus scanners are finding anything.

After that whole fiasco, everything is running super slow. And whenever I open any file (even my browser or a simple .exe) I am prompted to choose a program to open it. My computer basically isn't recognizing file types and acting all sorts of ****ed up because of it.

Now I am thinking that it might have something to do with Windows auto-installing IE9 on me during the whole malware thing. I canceled the insallation half way through, but IE9 has still become my default browser. Also, that is the suggested program for every file type.

Help?

I think one of your problems is a broken .exe file association. Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505

I'm not sure if this will fix the "everything is running super slow" problem, though.

Thanks, TRE! I'll try this but I have a feeling it's a deeper issue. It's not just .exe files, it's any file. I have to right click and click "start" to run any executable file.

Do you think half-installing IE9 could have messed things up?

Yeah, it looks like when IE9 was changing your default programs for different extensions something went crazy.

In the control panel is a thing called Default Programs... maybe you can poke around and see something in there. Otherwise I really do think this is the exact thing System Restore is meant for, so I'd at least try it.

paa.exe or something.

I had this EXACT same issue a few weeks ago, starting. At first, the solution was just to do a system restore.

After not really taking care of the problem for a few weeks, my hard drive is now inaccessible and my laptop is completely screwed.

So I'll suggest this - back up any files that you believe are necessary. You may need to reformat your hard drive if nothing works.

Download and Run Registry Booster. Find a non trial version somewhere.
