The charger outlet on the back of the laptop is what's damaged, whatever holds the cord in has broken or come loose, and the plug just sits in there loosely and doesn't charge unless I prop the plug against something so it's pressing very hard against the side. It's pretty much unusable at this point for travel.

Is there something I can do about this, or do I need to send it somewhere?

You'd need to send it somewhere.

And it's usually not cheap to fix that port.

I'm not really up to date with modern tech, is there, like, some budget junky type of laptop you can buy now? Pretty much just for browsing the web and typing documents and such.

I have a similar problem except it's doesn't charge at all.

I sent it to Dell.

Their solution was to tell me my battery had no warranty and that I have to buy an external disc drive if I want to see my operating system again.

Are you sure it isn't the AC Charger? It's a very common thing with Dell Chargers. My brother had two die on him, and I had my own die two weeks ago. See if your friends have an adapter you can try out.

My sister has the same model I do, and we cross-linked our adapters.

Hers continued to charge with mine, and mine failed to with hers.

I got a message saying my computer failed to identify the adapter. After a few weeks, it also informed me that it failed to identify the battery. The actual physical connection also has felt much looser than before the problem.

None of this matters though, because they removed my OS and refuse to put it back on themselves!
