Nah, I've literally only just started playing Medieval II today. I got the original Shogun and it went so far over my head it scared me off the series, but I got M2 free a while ago and gave it a go for the Hyrule: Total War mod (which is still downloading VERY SLOWLY as I type this)

I still got confused by the tutorial though. This series really isn't my cup of tea.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that Hyrule mod. The Total War series has some great mod support! I think Medieval II has a great ASoIaF mod too.

Is this one any less complicated than the other Total War games? I've tried a couple but they always overwhelm me with everything you need to do and control.. and this comes from a person who likes stuff like Civilization.

It's more complicated than Shogun 1, but much less complicated than basically any other Total War game. If your complaint with Total War was "I see a gazillion different units coming at me and I have absolutely no idea wtf they do." then that's not an issue in Shogun 2. It's basically swords > spears > cav > swords and everything else has obvious support roles. If your problem is "I can't deal with doing a bunch of stuff during tactical battles." then that hasn't changed.

There's also a demo and it's somewhat representative on the strategic level, but not really on the tactical level.

Pausing a lot helps a ton. Other than that you can always pratice by playing some custom battles. Give yourself an overwhelming force and you can try out some strategies.
Campaign map is like a tbs, so that shouldn't be that hard to figure out.
