Fair, and necessary.

The couple admits they knew about the fee but didn't pay it because they felt it wasn't worth it based on the low odds of a fire.

Fair, but no idea why they don't just make it part of the state taxes

Because fire departments are managed by cities and not states?

So make it part of the municipal taxes then, you know what he meant.

Well the ones that have to pay the fee are not part of the city, that's why they have to pay the fee.

The state or county should collect the taxes and distribute it to the nearest city

I think it's great that they have this as an optional fee. Few people are dumb enough to not pay it, especially when it's ****ing $75/yr, and it makes for entertaining stories.

I actually live in Tennessee, grew up in an area like this that was outside the town/city jurisdiction. Grew up with my family paying this fee!

Absolutely fair, they don't pay city taxes to support the fire department, so they pay a yearly fee to be covered. I'd do it if I moved back out where I grew up

Sorry, it is entirely stupid to have an optional fee on an important government service like the fire department when there is no private sector equivalent for those who decline the fee.

I was thinking they could just bill them the $75 after putting the fire out until I read this:

South Fulton Mayor David Crocker defended the fire department, saying that if firefighters responded to non-subscribers, no one would have an incentive to pay the fee.

Pretty good point, no one would pay the fee if they could just get billed for it when their house caught fire.

which is why I wonder why people are going "fair"

the problem is that this is a terrible way of doing things in general, the argument should not be over whether these people deserved it or not.

What's next, a police department fee?

If you don't pay it and a robber breaks into your house, you call the cops and they just stand outside your house and look as the robber takes everything of value in your house and flees?

I mean, it's only fair since you didn't pay your fee, right?

Yeah but in that case it's still in the interest of the cops to catch the robber so he doesn't do the same to paying customers

You already pay a fee for the police department. It's called taxes. People who don't pay taxes are not entitled to their services. Is this really so difficult to understand?

The news is about the family not paying a special fire department fee, not taxes. People who don't pay taxes have bigger problems than not being serviced by their local Fire and Police departments; namely, the IRS.

I believe the normal taxes they pay don't included a portion towards the Fire Department.
