the ratings keep going down...it literally got beat by "the vampire diaries" this week in the 18-49 rating. getting beaten by the CW pretty much is the most embarrassing thing that can happen to a major network show.

People have such crappy taste. :\

Maybe if they didn't air it at the same time as BBT...would it help if they put that Whitney crap there instead and give Parks & Rec's timeslot to Community or put it after the Office?

Yeah, that's definitely bad.

At least TVD is CW's big gun now.

Its ratings haven't actually been going down much until the World Series, which hurt EVERY comedy. Dramas, somehow, remained.

That said, everything I'm finding says that Community still beat Vampire Diaries.

To expand on that... Community went down 18 percent, Parks 14 percent, Office 15 percent (...Whitney up 5 percent. Baseball doesn't stop chicks.)

Hell, even Big Bang Theory was down 12 percent.

Well, this is NBC we're talking about, and it only needs one more season to make to syndication numbers. I think there's still a good chance it'll be renewed one last time.

The syndication numbers argument is definitely Community's best hope.

Well yeah, but the difference lies in a 2.9 for The Office despite a 1.4 for Community directly preceding it. That's painful. NBC will basically look at the 8 timeslot and wince.

Odd. Every link I found said they both did a 1.4, but Community had 3.5 million viewers to VP's 3.2.

I thought it would be renewed one more time, but Community keeps dropping faster than everything else, while a new show like Whitney consistently beats it in the ratings. If it gets renewed it will be solely because of good dvd sales+ the idea of syndication...but...when they have shows like two and a half men and TBBT in syndication getting like 3x the views of community, who is going to actually buy it for syndication?

Yeah, it definitely is. I've been fact-checking and whatnot now.

Funny little aside -- when I called one of my clients earlier she ranted and raved about Community for a lot longer than I'm supposed to allow for.

Yeah, but NBC knows they're not gonna win the 8 o'clock. Community is still beating stuff that isn't X-Factor and Big Bang Theory. Yesterday was a terrible night for comedies in general, not a sign that Community is still dropping.

Oh, of course they won't win it. Community may have clicked into place. The trouble is that even by modern NBC standards, even several decimal points higher is a pretty iffy place to click.

I think I'll reserve final judgment for another couple of weeks, but things don't exactly look great for the show, that much is clear. When I went into the office today one of my Community-loving friends was glum that we work in the ratings industry because he has to type away all the hard data and he wanted to forge higher numbers for the show, lol. (Not that it would matter considering we're just an outlet, not a headquarters.)

eh, I think it still has a chance if NBC realizes that community has the toughest competition, but only if they don't end up with any pilots that they find to be more likely to do well. I think it really all depends on that.

If this were several years ago I'd counter that NBC will just try to keep cranking out pilot after pilot after pilot, but their budget must be pretty conservative nowadays. They've been trying to rebrand for ages now and they wind up in this general rut regardless.

Of course, they're always going to have some pilots, and there's always a chance one of them will be the breakaway hit the industry is always looking for.

I still think it's pretty safe, all things considered.

It's not doing THAT much worse than Parks and Whitney, which have a better timeslot, and a better timeslot + wider target audience, respectively. I'm sure they realize that you put any of those three in the 8:00 slot and they're going to be the worst.

That, and they have a pretty bad track record with new shows, lately. I think Whitney's the only one that has stuck, and it's not even doing that great. It's just better business to stick with the show that is at least doing decent enough given the Death Slot, and is close to syndication. And, competition or not, it's pretty easy to sell any half-popular show into syndication because networks will fall for the "Hey, we can stick it at a time when it's not against America's favorite comedy and people singing, advertise the hell out of it, and make people assume it's the only thing on at the time."

And it gets pretty good DVD sales, doesn't it?

NBC doesn't have the money to risk new pilots when their track record is less than stellar lately.

While I am inclined to agree based on hope, that is like, the exact same argument people made for heroes when it got cancelled. I do think that it is safe if they don't get any decent pilots, but if they do, I think it is doomed. BBT, Two and a half men, HIMYM, the office, etc are pretty much crowding the syndication market and get WAYYYYY better ratings.

I think Community will get one more season after this. From what I hear, the creators have been aiming for a four-season length for the series; and since NBC execs are clearly very fond of the series, I think they'll grant them that wish. Also, like SEP pointed out, its DVD sales are rock-solid, and it's close to being eligible for syndication.

I just wonder what's going to happen to Whitney. Common sense dictates that it'll be cancelled after this season, since it's been pulling equal or worse numbers than Outsourced did; but for whatever reason, NBC seems gung-ho about supporting it as much as they can. It's easily been their most advertised new show this year, and they picked it up for a full season after only two episodes.

There's no such thing as a crowded syndication market. When it comes to sitcoms, syndication potential is what network execs absolutely go bananas for; once a sitcom has been around for a few years, the focus immediately shifts to getting the most out of syndication, rather than being concerned with the Nielsen ratings. That's why Rules of Engagement is still on the air, and it's also why shows like According to Jim and Malcolm in the Middle stuck around as long as they did.

Yeah, but Heroes just ended up being absolutely terrible and didn't have specific genre competition contributing to its death. It just... Died on its own. Even the core fanbase began to turn on it when it ended up so convoluted, and it was never really an exec darling like Community.

Heroes was heavily criticized for being bad by lots of people in the last seasons it had and there were massive divisions in the fanbase, I don`t think ANYBODY that watches Community hates it. So I don`t think it`s the same situation as that at all.
