Everything about the show is much smarter, more current, more relevant, and more real than anything Idol ever was.

It's great.

I can't be the only person on b8 watching this show, can I?

X-Factor is better than Pop Idol ever was

Though X-Factor does tend to get a bit...overproduced. Like, they'll have a montage before each act which is fine. Then this bizarre series of camera cuts and dramatic zooming, set to epic music, before the voiceover guy says the name of the act in his deepest, most dramatic sounding voice.

Unfortunately, when said act is called "SAMI BROOKES" it just becomes hilarious!

I LOVE that they do that. I love that the show has that sort of high production to it and has good industry sensibilities.

American Idol was always just "here's a bunch of singers, standing there, singing 20 year old songs, vote on which one has the best voice." And 80% of the time, the artists who won the show went absolutely nowhere afterward. The only former Idol contestants who are at all relevant still are Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Adam Lambert. The rest are completely forgettable because they never had much going for them other than their voice.

This show, however, actually views the contestants as artists, and has them doing much more contemporary performances that have a lot more thought put into them. Everything about it is just way better, and there are several contestants on the show this season I can very easily picture having successful music careers. I never felt that while watching Idol.

The most entertaining thing about Simon for me was never him being harsh, it was seeing him interact with Paula, which this show still has, so I'm good on that front

Thanks for saving me the trouble of typing this out. I haven't actually watched the show, but this is exactly what I planned on saying after watching those videos. The show basically proves that these people are just as talented as any famous touring artists because you can see how charismatic they are with the full production of a top level performer.

Exactly. It lets you see who these people are/would be in the context of today's music industry. Not just a bunch of disposable people with no personality who can hold a note.

Still, over 10 seasons of that show, they've discovered less than 5 truly worthwhile artists.

Oh I get that. It's a good idea.

It's just that montage. I crack up when I'm supposed to be in GET HYPE mode for Sami Brookes. Iunno, there's just no...mystique for someone like that I guess? It's better with the groups, just because having a group name is a bit more interesting.

Funny how it's viewed as fresh and different in the US, when it's a tired formula now in the UK. Probably why Simon Cowell shifted it over to a different audience.

Is the US version as blatantly scripted as it is in the UK?

PREDICTION- One of the judges will disagree with the others so strongly that he/she storms off the show, only to 'shockingly' come back an episode or two later.

This will happen every. Single. Year. And every time they'll pretend it's a major news story.

i don't care much about tv talent shows (imagine that), but i will point out that the uk x factor has a similarly crap success rate. unless i'm forgetting someone, leona lewis is just about the only artist of even slight international renown that's emerged from that show in like seven seasons, and ironically she's one of those people who won almost entirely on the strength of her voice.

which is what you were arguing against, i think.

Haven't quite a few of them had success in the UK though? It's tremendously difficult for UK artists to break through in America in general, so I wouldn't expect a contestant from a UK show being able to do it very often at all. I think the story will be different with the US version, cause if you can make it in the US you can make it anywhere.

well, let's see:

Steve Brookstein - total pub singer, name is now synonymous with utter failure
Shayne Ward - had a few hits but soon became totally irrelevant
Leona Lewis - as stated.
Leon Jackson - see steve
Alexandra Burke - relatively successful in that she's now the most irritating purveyor of crap dance music in the uk, but she'll forever be a diet leona.
Joe McElderry - only notable thing this guy has done since winning is come out as gay.
Matt Cardle - too early to say, really. far from the worst winner though.
