It's action is satisfying if not mindless.

But that's about as good as it gets. If you like the opening you'll enjoy the movie.

And how many liberties did this movie take with the actual X-Men lore? The girlfriend being a mutant that tricked Logan, etc.

It is just wishful thinking/delusion. The director for first class literally said that first class was a prequel to the other movies in interviews. He did not specify "the first and second"
