Positives:
- Gambit is probably the coolest looking character in comics. The trenchcoat, the staff, the explosive playing cards, the hair. The gloves, the head thing, the eyes, some how pulling off a pink and blue color scheme. It's mostly the trenchcoat and playing cards, but it all works out.
- He's got a cool power. He touches things and makes them explode. And again, he makes pink work.
- The romance with Rogue was THE 90s couple. Even adding Joseph for awhile for a love triangle was well done and interesting.

Negatives:
- I cannot remember the last great story he's had. He's had some good ones: Uncanny #350 (and the twenty-plus issues where it was heavy on his mind leading up to it), the non-date in X-Men #4-5, his introduction to comics with L'il Munroe thievin together, I guess the Apocalypse stuff within the last several years was pretty good. But he never really has good stories. He's a great side or secondary character with a trademark accent (but on the X-Men from the Claremont years doesn't?) who blows stuff up, woos the ladies, makes excellent quips, and is great in a fight?
- Seriously, his story material. He's got a great background with the Thieves' Guild and Marauders, but I've never read anything good where it digs into his past. Belladonna's annoying and nobody else is memorable.
- His ties are few even though he's been around twenty years. Rogue's the main one with Mr. Sinister, Storm, Bishop, Wolverine, and Copycat the only people I think writers regularly pair him up with as friends/enemies.
- He's just cool. Wolverine's cool because he had a ton of story in the eighties (and the backlash is that he's usually berserker beer-guzzler sniktbub since the nineties, though he's gotten better despite being on twenty teams). Gambit just showed up, looked cool, had some background beginnings, then Claremont left and he's just been the romantic lead for Rogue ever since. That's pretty much his character: thief, dark past, Tuxedo Mask.
