From: Giggsalot | #149 i feel he has insane potential, i'd just be slightly disappointed if section.80 was the best thing he ever did. whereas i think a lot of people might not. i dunno.
Yeah, I wouldn't. I'd just move on to the next album, and enjoy Section.80 for what it is. I think he has a brighter future than ASAP Rocky, though - do you think he will do anything significant with a studio album on a major label next year? I dunno. Good on him for getting a $3 million deal, but it might have been better for him to stick on a smaller label. Then again, ASAP is surrounded by a ton of great producers, so there's definitely a chance that ASAP can live up to his potential.
Here's a new Roots song. Undun is gonna be so good.
well, it's average lyrically for sure. his musicality is great though - his flow, voice and chemistry with the beats could hardly be better.
and nah, i wouldn't be surprised (or disappointed) if ASAP never tops this. but who knows? the obvious comparison in my mind is curren$y and his sole trick hasn't got old yet.
in any case, i'm not sure how anyone holds up The Sideline Story as the pinnacle of what's been a great year for rap. it's far from a bad album (it's actually very listenable) but as per with Cole every element is slightly above average and there's barely even a notable moment. the only songs that don't blend into anonymity (mr nice watch and the title track) feel so bad and out-of-place than they have you wishing for the pleasant piano-based monotony to come back.
Well I don't think has been a very good year for rap in general so there's that. Nothing i've heard from rap this year comes anywhere CLOSE to House of Balloons or Bon Iver.

I still haven't listened to ASAP rocky or section.80 for that matter
I wouldn't say this isn't a good year for rap though, Returnof4eva and Oneirology are both top tier releases for me.
Also the whole hype around Odd Future is exciting, despite Goblin only being average. They all have great potential. Tyler's good songs are GREAT, Earl hasn't written a bad verse and I'm sure he will be on that same level when he returns, Mellowhype is the most consistent out of the bunch and Numbers is looking very good so far (64 goes hard, 65 is swell, 67 is great). Mike G and Domo had a slow start but their future is very bright (Under The Influence was a great mixtape and Forest Green shows that Mike G is more than your average mellow rapper). The Internet (Syd and Matt Martians) are releasing a record in december. Not to mention Frank Ocean, one of the best songwriters to rise to popularity in 2011. I know a lot of you won't agree and this is basically just me pulling a Realo, but I've been following them on close foot since the start of this year and it's the most excited I've been for some buzz AROUND the music since.. well ever. I normally don't care much for the whole hype and just listen to the songs but I just really like this collective. Not to mention they're incredibly diverse for what is basically an immature bunch of black kids. (Vince you so racist) Rap with jazzy chords, stoner rap, insane horror rap, R&B, really weird electronic that probably sounds even better on acid, and now the Internet with Syd's great voice and Matt Martians' trippy beats, tyler has spoken about wanting to do more jazzy jam sessions
Not a good year for rap? Shaolin vs. The Wu-Tang, Section.80, Oneirology, LiveLoveASAP, ReturnOf4Eva, Black Up, The Greatest Story Never Told, Electronic Dream, Madlib Medicine Show: No. 9 - Channel 85 Presents Nittyville... that's 9 albums I'd give a B or higher to. And I'm probably forgetting something! Plenty to like this year, and we have a Roots album in a month to look forward to.
I think I'd go as far as 15 albums that I'd put on at least a "B." And that's with the new Roots, Rick Ross, Tonedeff, Common, Pusha T and Drake still to come out. Off the top of my head.
Yeah i've heard most of those albums and the only one I really find appealing is Oneriology. I'll listen to Section80 today. It's probably just Me to be honest. Ever since I started making music I just dislike Alot of the rap out lately. It's why i've had Jay Electronica on repeat. Everyone else just sounds corny. They let the beat do all the walking like rappers are the guests on the beat.

And as one of the few people who actually enjoyed the original Fear of God (especially for what it was), a beefed up version appeals to me quite a bit!
Jerk. I'll be disappointed if there's nothing that lives up to his song with Nas on there. Is there a tracklist with features and producers around anywhere?
Not sure about a tracklist, but it's supposed to be ten songs and entirely produced by No I.D. And I think Nas might be the only guest. He's certainly talked a lot about it being a proper old school style effort.
He's also released Blue Sky and Sweet from it recently, though I haven't heard either. Reception has been great though.

For anyone interested, I think I'll post my thoughts on Moogfest I shared at a couple other places...
Moogfest was amazing. The weather was kind of unexpectedly cold and rainy(especially Friday), but that didn't effect it too much, as the majority of the venues were in-doors, something I wasn't really accustomed to. Me and my girlfriend were primarily going to see Crystal Castles, but there was plenty of other stuff that was enticing. For now, I'll just give a brief run down of some of the highlights(as well as some of the few drawbacks), as well as each performance we checked out.
First place we checked out was The Orange Peel, which apparently is supposed to be one of the coolest concert venues in the country, according to some Rolling Stone article. As we are in line waiting to get into this place, I notice its a pretty small venue. One guy tells me "During last Moogfest, this place fills up fast and there is usually a big line to get in, so its hard to travel from venue to venue and get a decent spot in here." So right off the bat, I realize were probably gonna be spending a good amount of time here. There's a few conflincts with couple other acts I wanted to see, notably Little Dragon and Chromeo, but I'll get to that later.
First band we end up seeing is Austra. Prior to Moogfest, I had only heard a handful of their music, but as soon as the first track comes on, this group caught my attention. Really energetic mostly female band:
(Sound on these videos isn't the greatest, but the video quality isn't bad)
Next after this is Bradford Cox in the form of the Atlas Sound side project. Deerhunter is from Atlanta, so I've managed to see them several times, but never Cox's solo act. It's definitely a different experience from seeing Deerhunter. At times, it felt a lot like Bradford Cox put more soul into these songs then he does during Deerhunter sets, especially Walkabout, that was ****ing great. Sheila was another notable song. This was arguably my favorite set of the night. Say what you will about the guy and his "eccentric" qualities, the dude knows how to immerse people into his music.
Right after this, I was debating to myself whether or not to go check out Little Dragon after about halfway through Tobacco's set, but we ended up staying because Little Dragon had to cancel due to one of their band members being sick or something. Sort of disappointed they couldn't make it :/ but on the other hand, I got to see Tobacco and see how he compares to Black Moth Super Rainbow live.
To be put it bluntly, this was pretty much a Black Moth Super Rainbow performance, but without the stage diving ape suit wearing antics I was accustomed to the first goaround. Trippy visuals, strange pornographic videos of aliens and even pterodactyls doing all kinds of leud acts(mostly to females >_>) that I can't talk about on here, just really crazy ****. Oh, and the music is obviously a psychedelic mind ****. They play pretty much all their hits off of ****ed Up Friends and Maniac Meat, pretty fun set.
After this we checked out Chromeo at the Animoog Playground for a few tracks, but didn't stay too long because it was pouring down hard and was pretty damn cold out. Chromeo and the rest of the crowd were still REALLY damn lively though, so it was pretty cool checking these guys out in this setting. I had seen them before in the past, so it wasn't too much of a loss to me.
We got some dinner, and then after a big break, decided to check out the rest of Moby's set, as well as Flying Lotus.
Moby was way more intense and rave heavy than I was expecting, but it was also towards the latter half of the set, so I figured he was probably busting out the more bass heavy stuff. Got some pretty cool videos/pictures of Moby that I'll hafta upload at a later date. The best way to sum it up...it was like walking into an arena-wide laser rave party.
After this, we wrapped up the night sitting in the balcony seats checking out some Flying Lotus, because we were both pretty tired at this point.
Honestly, I don't really see what the big deal about Lotus is, I guess he's just not my cup of tea. His studio albums are just kind of like "Oh, that's kinda cool" to me, but nothing else. His live show isn't really all that impressive either. Just seemed like some fancy loops repeated over and over.
I'll get to Saturday(which was totally the best day) and Sunday later!!
Giggs I just noticed you switched your rym rating descriptors from The Wire references to The Sopranos. My two favorite shows right there. As good as The Wire was though, The Sopranos definitely tops it. I just finished rewatching the entire series. phenomenal show.
gotta say I didn't dislike as many of Tony's crew as you apparently did, but I suppose you gotta downrate somebody. Where would Bobby fall on that list?

the icon ownz all posted... Not a good year for rap? you're not counting XXX on that list? that may be my favorite rap release this year, although I haven't heard Black Up yet and I really like digable planets.
i wouldn't disagree that my favourite album of this year so far is fairly weak in comparison to the best of past years, but the depth has been stunning
and i have faith it might yet be dethroned! SAIVO SAIVO SAIVO
I think there are three albums -- Let England Shake, Room(s), and Bad As Me -- that are just as good, if not better, than my favourite album of 2010 -- North -- and that's not including the finally released Smile. Since I'm a bit bored waiting for Suree to wake up, here's a comparison of my top 10s from the last two years:
2010
10 | Kanye West | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 09 | The Walkmen | Lisbon 08 | The Roots | How I Got Over 07 | Zola Jesus | Stridulum 06 | Big Boi | Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty 05 | Big K.R.I.T. | K.R.I.T Wuz Here 04 | Shackleton | Fabric 55 03 | Sun Kil Moon | Admiral Fell Promises 02 | Actress | Splazsh 01 | Darkstar | North
2011
10 | CunninLynguists | Oneirology 09 | Kreng | Grimoire 08 | Big K.R.I.T. | ReturnOf4Eva 07 | Kendrick Lamarr | Section.80 06 | Scuba | DJ Kicks 05 | Grouper | A I A 04 | Gillian Welch | The Harrow & the Harvest 03 | PJ Harvey | Let England Shake 02 | Tom Waits | Bad As Me 01 | Machinedrum | Room(s) 00 | The Beach Boys | SMiLE
And there are albums I don't have room for! Apocalypse, A Creature I Do Not Know, Eye Contact, Black Sun and more. It's hard to compare years, but 2011 has more albums I love, more albums I really enjoy, and albums I feel bad for leaving off a top 10 list. On top of that, I still haven't digested the Pinch/Shackleton record, and I'm still waiting to hear the Roots record. Give me 2011.
From: Shaggysaurus | #181 have you played this? how do you like it?
i don't like that it's eating my life away. i do love how absorbed I am in the game. so much better than oblivion, on par with new vegas.

2010 1. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest 2. Tame Impala - Innerspeaker 3. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 4. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma 5. Earl Sweatshirt - EARL
2011 1. St. Vincent - Strange Mercy 2. The Weeknd - House of Balloons 3. Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver 4. Destroyer - Kaputt 5. James Blake - James Blake
there's really no comparison between them for me. I haven't checked out that Machinedrum album though.
samples of the new actress single. haven't listened. also, his album is out next year, this single is this year, and then... I think there's still an unmentioned EP somewhere? not sure.
New Vegas - A+ Skyrim - A Morrowind - B+ Fallout 3 - B Oblivion - D
that's how i'd grade 'em. i really, really like new vegas.
I liked New Vegas a lot too. which reminds me, I should finish my second playthrough, I was playing a NCR hating total b****. I really want to finish it now that apparently they have a DLC which continues the story.
anyway, here's how I'd score them:
Morrowind - A+ Fallout New Vegas - A- Oblivion with Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul - A- Fallout 3 - B+ vanilla Oblivion - F
I definitely don't think all games need to be like Morrowind, in fact its so archaic that none should. But that game has a level of depth that I have never seen in any other game. The main quest is so f***ing dense, its a shame that pure action is rated so high above story these days.
glad to hear that Skyrim is being received so well though. I just tried to install in on my macbook pro via bootcamp, but alas, no go. it would run, but just felt sluggish even on low settings
Gonna have to play it on the 360
-- ~Shaggy~ Can I tell you that you are the purple in me?
2010 1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 2. Murmuüre - Murmuüre 3. Curren$y - Pilot Talk 4. The Black Keys - Brothers 5. Earl Sweatshirt - EARL 6. Cloudland Canyon - Fin Eaves 7. Shackleton - Fabric 55 8. Darkstar - North 9. The Radio Dept. - Clinging to a Scheme 10. The Roots - How I Got Over
2011 1. Lil B - I'm Gay 2. The Weeknd - House of Balloons 3. Kendrick Lamar - Section.80 4. John Maus - We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves 5. Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica 6. ASAP Rocky - LiveLoveA$AP 7. The Antlers - Burst Apart 8. Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver 9. Bop - The Amazing Adventures of One Curious Pixel 10. Robedoor - Too Down To Die
2011 is definitely better in my opinion, considering i still have 4.5 starred albums that got snubbed while 2010 was going through 4 star albums at no. 8

I just reinstalled it before Skyrim came out, but I'm waiting for the DLC to go on sale before I start another playthrough. I'm hoping they go on sale during the traditional Steam Thanksgiving blowout.

let's see what I can find
Give Room(s) a shot! Most fun album this year. You might like that Grouper record too if you're looking for some ambient stuff.
google music launched officially today. sounds like an okay service for purchasing digital music, but there's something specific I think other services should offer:
"Speaking of indie bands: Google Music includes a feature called artist hub that makes it possible for musicians to upload their own music and sell them at a price point of their choosing. Artists will keep 70 percent of their revenue, and in the future also be able to sell music directly on YouTube."
This is a weird discussion for Me. 2010 had the best Kanye album so it's pretty high for Me. But 2011 has a J and Yay album that doesn't even crack my top ten. That's nuts. James Blake and House of Balloons have like 600 combined plays so far. Bon I'ver and Helplessness Blues are 2 of the best folky pop albums i've ever heard and folk music is one of my favorite genres. Let England Shake is dope. King of Limbs is decent by Radiohead standards but is still pretty solid. Drake's album and Tyler's albums were complete flops for Me and 2011 is still loaded.

nice to see your face in these topics again, tranny! as contrived as this sounds maybe the easiest way for me to rec you recent stuff would be if you pop your head into my crazy list topic come new year - i'm planning to talk about every album i've heard from 2011 (with great brevity, for the most part), so it might be easier to pick out what interests you from there. i don't even know what you listen to these days anyway!
oh, and my standard daily check, website-wise, is: rateyourmusic, pitchfork, sputnikmusic, hiphopdx and 2dopeboyz. occasionally look at the quietus, the silent ballet and 130bpm too, to round out stuff the others might not catch.
My go to for music are just other people (friends, people on here, other message boards). I don't tend to go on music review sites much, but occasionally it's fun. RYM/Last.fm get me some music too. Oh, and the Needle Drop on youtube, but I guess not that many people are fans of his reviews.
