I used him all the time in Gen I. He was the coolest of cool back when he only had to compete with 150 other pokemon.

Nidoking is one of those where everything just falls into place. It has a cool design, you can get it early game, has a nice "growing up" story to it, like Charizard in a way. And it can handle itself in battle, particularly with dat movepool. Not hard to see where it comes from.

I had a pretty badass Nidoking on my Gen 1 team. IIRC he had Surf, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Earthquake. That was back when the best strategy I could come up with was "pick moves that are super-effective against the most types".
