Let me write a few words about my experiences (those I can remember) with each character in the World of Ruin.

Celes Chere
The game's second half (it honestly seemed like less than half the game even with all the optional stuff, but whatever) is largely centered around Celes. She emerges as the lone playable character after Kefka ****s everyone's **** up, and is the only one that remains playable from then until the game's end. That being the case, I think that Celes may be the game's "most playable" character, rivaled only by Sabin.

After the events of the Floating Continent, Celes awakens in a small shack, being tended to by her old "grandfather," Cid. She is informed that it's been a year since the world was torn apart, and she's been in a coma the entire time. Bewildered, she first attempts to care for Cid, who has grown very ill and weary. By feeding him a rotten fish (GMUUUUUUUN), Celes inadvertently sends him on that long trip up the pearly gates. With an almost comical "goodbye" and a stupid facial expression, Cid dies. With the world in ruin, her old friends assuredly dead, and her loving father-figure now gone, Celes now has nothing left to live for. In a shocking and touching scene, she climbs a cliff face and, empty of hope, she attempts ritual Japanese seppuku by... just kidding, she tries to kill herself by jumping off the cliff and into the waters below.

She washes ashore (getting a Tom-Hanks-in-Castaway vibe from ol' Celery here, definitely a character you wanna root for), still alive and miserable... until she notices a peculiar bird. Amazingly, this bird is carrying Locke's signature bandanna. To Celes, this is an omen that Locke is still alive. She is immediately emboldened, casting her despair for new-found determination and vigor. She discovers Cid's makeshift raft and uses it to sail to the main overworld, where she begins locating and recruiting her old friends one by one.

After hitting rock bottom, Celes immediately assumes a hopeful leadership role. She is unrelenting in her desire to find everyone (especially Locke), hit Kefka where he lives, and rebuild the world. In actuality, I used her as my lead character (the one shown walking around) for the entire World of Ruin. Her history as a General just seemed to command it. Plus, with the cape and regal-colored tiara, she had the best and most "leader-like" sprite in the game.

Sabin Figaro
Sabin is available for recruitment almost immediately after Celes takes Cid's raft across the great blue (and purple and red, blah) sea. He is found in the closest town over. Kefka has just launched an attack on said town, and one of its buildings is now on fire and about to collapse. Sabin, the great hero that he is, uses his strength to hold the entire building up in the hopes that someone will rush inside and rescue the child trapped within. Celes recognizes the situation and saves the boy. Afterward, she and Sabin reunite, and Sabin becomes the first old friend to rejoin the struggle.

Despite the tragedy of the past year, Sabin maintains a steely and optimistic outlook, telling Terra "did you think a little thing like the end of the world would stop me?" With the muscle back on board, they duo journey to find everyone else.

Sabin holding up the building was great.

Also, I can only hope that you weren't unfortunate enough to have an enemy petrify you while walking to the town with Sabin in it. Because that's a thing that can actually happen, giving you an instant game over since Celes is the only party member.

Happened on my second playthrough, I believe.

Nope, didn't happen. My worst fight happened in Kefka's Tower. I was using a group comprised of a beefed up Terra and three considerably weaker characters. I wrote about it earlier this topic:

Fight against three Innocs, an enemy I've never seen before.

Terra casts 2x Ultima, but not before one of the ****ers casts "Brain****" and Terra hits everyone else, killing all except her. Now she's spinning around. Then she gets spinny and frozen. Then these Innoc-u-****s continue doing the same Brain****, Ice, and Plasma attacks that do nothing. This lasts at least five minutes, my helpless ass just watching as they cast Pearl every couple of minutes to whittle me down.

best game ever

Edgar Figaro
Edgar is found shortly after Sabin, but he is acting rather strangely to say the least. In fact, he is under the guise of "Gerad," a master thief in charge of a ragtag group of ruffians. This Gerad claims that he has no knowledge of Edgar Figaro, but Celes sniffs him out immediately due to his conspicuously lecherous manner of addressing her. "Gerad" and his crew make their way toward a secret mountainside cave with Celes and Sabin tailing them. After making their way through the caves, they emerge, surprisingly enough, in Castle Figaro, which had gotten itself stuck underground.

Celes and Sabin confront Edgar in the castle's engine's room, and it is here where he reveals his (rather poorly hidden) real identity, claiming that he took up the fake identity only to trick the group of bandits into showing him the location of his castle. The duo is now a trio, and we tackle a strange and hairy boss together. Edgar is back! TOOLS, babeh!

Like Sabin and Celes, Edgar is one of my favorite FFVI characters. Great personality, great sprite, and very fun in battle. Glad to have him back.

Plus, if you were able to get Setzer first, then you'd only need two party members to reach Kefka's Tower.

Setzer Gabbiani
After burrowing across the overworld in Castle Figaro, we can find Setzer grounded (remember that the airship was destroyed) and drinking his troubles away in a bar. The trio request his help once again, but he is unwilling, a defeated man. The emboldened Celes, however, sings him a few words of encouragement and he joins up.

Setzer tells us of another airship, just as good (if not better) than his old one. It's called the Falcon, and it rests beyond a cryptic and deadly cave system called "Darill's Tomb." We walk through, stomp some fools, collect some treasure, and locate the ship. It is here where light is finally shed on Setzer's past. It turns out that Darill was an old flame of his. They enjoyed an exciting, competitive relationship. In fact, Darill built the Falcon squarely so she could outrace Setzer's ship. They race, she crashes and dies, Setzer conceals the Falcon in her honor. The guilt was eating away at him all these years something maybe.

We take the ship and go. Overworld music changes THANK GOD.

Terra Branford
Terra's is an interesting case. She can be first seen early on (I found her after recruiting Sabin), but this chance encounter caught me by surprise. My team of Celes and Sabin found Terra in a town with two other adults (a young husband and wife) who had taken it upon themselves to care for the lost children whose children fell victim to Kefka's fury. The once fearless and peerless fighter had become a caretaker - a nanny. While tending to these poor children is a kind and noble cause, I suppose badass points can be deducted nonetheless. My dynamic duo plead with Terra to join, but she refuses, claiming that she has lost the will to fight and that her skills have deteriorated.

This is proven mere minutes later when Phunbaba (lol), a powerful demon, attacks the town. Terra tries to fend him off but is easily defeated, forcing Celes and Sabin to jump in and chase him off. Terra reiterates that her place is now with these children, and I leave her to whatever perverted Japanese fantasies she has in mind.

We can return to her after acquiring the second airship, and I do this immediately. We see Phunbaba attack the town once again. This time, however, Terra emerges in Morphed/Tranced form and kills the living **** out of him. She realizes that her newfound love for these children is not a source of weakness, but strength. She then joins the party after assuring the children, who have grown to love her as a mother, that she will return.

Cyan Garamonde
Before Kefka splooged on the world, we met up with a young pair of lovers maintaining a long-distance relationship due to the guy's duties as a soldier. The girl was the worrying type and couldn't stand the fact that her guy wasn't sending her letters. We encounter this same girl in the World of Ruin and are surprised to learn that her boyfriend has conspicuously begun sending her letters from Mt. Zozo.

While journeying there, the party discovers that Cyan has made home atop the mountain. The actual boyfriend is sadly dead, and Cyan has been deceiving the girl by sending her letters in his name, too grief stricken to tell her the truth (likely because of his own grief and experience with irreplaceable loss). After talking with the party, he realizes that while his heart may have been in the right place, his actions were not for the best. He writes one final letter to the girl to tell her the truth and end the deception. He also joins the party.

A bit further on, I revisited Doma with Cyan in the party, and here is the basis for maybe the game's most interesting and unique sidequest. Cyan, still struggling with internal demons, has his dreams invaded by the Three Dream Stooges. I'm not making this up guyz! The other party members somehow enter his mind to blast these three punks. Afterward, we are forced through Cyan's tragic memories, including a dream version of the Phantom Train that Sabin so lovingly Zangief'd in the World of Balance. We eventually vanquish a boss that had been functioning as the manifestation of Cyan's fear, doubt, and guilt. With this demon destroyed, Cyan can fight for the memory of his family without being cursed by it. He learns the rest of his (unfortunately useless) Sword Techs.

Locke Cole
Locke can be found by completing the Phoenix Cave, which is only accessible after acquiring the airship. There are rumors that this cave houses the legendary Phoenix Magicite, a Magicite capable of resurrecting the dearly departed. I immediately suspect that Locke has journeyed here to secure the Magicite for his old flame Rachel, so I send the crew in after him.

The Phoenix Cave is a complex puzzle that needs two teams cooperating to beat, but it was actually much less aggravating than I anticipated, especially since Mog led one of the teams with his Moogle Charm in hand. We make it through this underground maze and eventually find Locke and the Magicite at the end. He smiles, winks, and immediately rejoins his old friends. He also hands over a large stockpile of delicious booty, treasure from empty chests (empty when we got to 'em!) that he had reached first. I considered that a really nice touch.

After exiting the cave, we immediately make our way to Rachel. Locke uses the power of Phoenix, and... I CAN'T CONTROL IT!

Dark Rachel rises!!!

Not really, but she does wake up. Unfortunately, even Phoenix's powers are limited, and Rachel is only granted scarce seconds in this mortal coil. Selflessly, she uses her last moments on earth to comfort Locke. She tells me to let go of his guilt, live for the future, and live for the one who's now in his heart (obviously hinting toward Celes without stating it outright). She passes again, and that, IIRC, is pretty much the end of Locke's story, barring a few more moments of tenderness and development with Celes.

I really like the way Locke and Celes's relationship was handled. Very classy, very touching, and here's the important part: very subtle. A 2011 game would have spelled it out for us with 20 more conversations and a sex scene. Final Fantasy VI thought more of its audience. Or maybe the technical limitations of the time made sex scenes unrealistic, who knows.
