So I forgot about this and the topic purged. Whoops.

Anyway, I finished Dragon Quest IV (Alena best character in the game) over my vacation, so the next game in the series would be Dragon Quest V, which is supposedly the best game in the series.

I'll start this game tonight. In the meantime, you can check out Pun's topic on this game, just search DQ on the board.

I thought it would have been better for a new game to have a new topic anyway.

Possibly.

Named the hero "Hero" because I'm great at having original names, of course.
Anyway, we start by seeing the hero being born in a castle where his father, Pankraz is the king. Apparently Hero was dreaming and he gets to explore the ship. The ship lands at the port, and the hero meets both Nera and Deborah.
Later on the map, Hero gets into a battle with three slimes. Pankraz enters the fight (though he really didn't have to) and he is a complete powerhouse. I really do like the battle themes in this series so far, this one included.
In town, Hero's father is a local celebrity it seems. Hero meets Bianca, who apparently cannot read a simple book. Anyway, someone is lost in the cave just outside of town. Surely this is extremely unimportant and can be ignored, right?

Of course not.

Managed to get Hero's level up to 4, and got to two chests which were pretty useless item-wise.
This cave may take longer than I thought, though the Heal spell will definitely help.

It turns out if I just continued in the cave it would be easy >_> The leather shield and wayfarer's clothes made Hero almost completely impervious to any damage from the enemies there, and Hero rescued the guy who somehow got himself trapped under a boulder.

The next day, Pankraz and Hero decide to escort Bianca and her mom back to the nearby town of Roundbeck. Hero and Bianca go for a walk and meet two kids attacking a nearby cat. The kids say that they will not give up the cat unless Hero and Bianca can defeat the ghosts at nearby Uptaten Towers. So at night, the two set out for the towers (which looks more like a castle. whatever)

The only entrance to the towers is in the back. After going through a few rooms Bianca gets herself kidnapped. Hero later finds her under a tombstone with her name on it. Strange. Making their way near the bottom, they find the count of the tower, who asks them to defeat the boss to lay all the ghosts around to rest.

Hero and Bianca head to the boss chamber and confront him, but they then fall into a pit and are turned in to a dish for the skeletons on the ground floor. However, the party makes quick work of the skeleton army.

The two confront the boss again to finally battle him.

I lost this battle and was sent back to the inn, so I'll get back to this later.

Going back to the castle at a higher level and with better equipment proves to be a success, as the boss goes down to Her's attacks and Bianca's Frizz spell and a single Kasap. The count and his wife thank the two kids and give them a gold orb. The two then return to the town of Roundbeck.

In Roundbeck, Bianca and Hero save the cat, who joins the party. Bianca leaves as Pankraz takes Hero back to the original town. There, a man dressed similar to Hero takes a look at Hero's gold orb, and gives him some words of encouragement. In the town's pub, there's an invisible girl on the counter. She tells Hero to meet him in the town's only cellar, which is Hero's house. There, she takes Hero to the fairy's kingdom. Their flute was stolen and now they cannot progress through the seasons and they have fallen into eternal winter.

The cave to the west of town has a dwarf in it who has hidden a book that allows the user to unlock doors, which Hero finds. Better than holding onto the thief's key for most of the game, I guess. Next time Hero will save the fairy kingdom from its eternal winter.

Ironically, the game still has you hold on to the Magic Key and the Ultimate Key gladly, which is even more ridiculous than usual, as you can actually get the Ultimate Key before the Magic Key.

Considering they open different types of doors, it isn't too weird, but the names definitely suggest otherwise.

The ice castle has some easily figured out sliding puzzles, which took little time. There were two bosses: the first was so easy it didn't matter. The queen in the second match was much difficult, she managed to knock out Honey and had an annoying Heal spell to keep her alive. Eventually Hero and Saber, with help from the Kasap Honey used before she died, took out the queen with physical attacks. In the chests was a boomerang (after I bought one, thanks game) and the Herald of Spring, which is returned to the fairies.

The fairies say that they will repay Hero later in his life if he returns here. Honey gives Hero a branch to remember them.

It was also here where I found out Bianca's equipment was in the bag. I decided to sell it all anyway.

When Hero returns, Pankraz is getting ready to leave to the nearby kingdom of Coburg. After a lengthy discussion in the king's chamber, Pankraz is told to look after Prince Harry. Hero finds the prince's secret staircase, and is pushed out of the way by kidnappers who obviously kidnap the prince. Hero runs up to Pankraz, who dashes out to save him.

There's also some locked doors in the castle Hero can't open. Oh well.

Hero and Saber head over to the kidnapper's hideout to save Prince Harry. It's a pretty straight-forward dungeon with a few maze-like passages and a small boat ride. Hero meets up with Pankraz halfway through, who rejoins the party and provides free healing for Hero. Harry is found in a cell in the last room. Without a key, Pankraz instead charges the door, knocking it completely out of the way. Monsters appear to trap the party, so Hero and Saber lead Prince Harry out of the cave... or they would have, except the party runs into an unwinnable boss fight at the end of the cave. Pankraz shows up and beats down the boss's minions.

The boss then threatens to end Hero's life if Pankraz resists any further. With his son's life on the line, Pankraz stands there and gets beaten to save his son at the cost of his own life. His dying words tell Hero that his mother is alive.

Ten years pass as Hero and Harry are thrown into a life of slavery. Saber is left to fend for himself.

As slaves, Hero and Harry save a female slave named Maria from getting whipped, and are thrown into a jail cell. Maria's brother is actually a soldier in the army, and to thank them, he prepares a barrel with all of Hero's possessions. He then tells Hero, Harry and Maria to flee the area using the barrel. They do, and end up near a church. Maria decides to become a nun and pray for a successful journey for Hero and Harry.

Heading North, there seems to be some trouble going on in Coburg, however even with Harry in the party we can't cross the bridge to get there. In Party Chat Harry doesn't seem to mind, it wasn't like he wanted the king position anyway. Hero's hometown is a complete wreck, almost all the buildings have been destroyed and the well is dried up. However, that last house that could not be reached in the prologue is open. The old man there recognizes Hero, and tells him of Pankraz's hideout inside the cave.

Hero's exploration of the cave provides him with some important items, such as the night light. At the bottom of the cave, Hero finds a letter addressed to him from his father.

His father states that he has been looking for the legendary hero, the one who can wield the Zenithian equipment. (Unfortunately Sofia is not present in this game, it seems.) Hero's mother is currently captured and only the legendary hero can save her. Unfortunately Hero is not this legendary hero, but his quest is to find the one who can. Hero picks up the Zenithian Sword, which is lying there in the cave. He can't equip it, obviously, but it gets stored in the bag.

The nun at the church tells Hero to head west, to that town Bianca is from. Sure, why not.
