Those guys are practically just fans of the games like you.
and thing is, that's exactly who this topic is about. some guys aren't really fans of their own stuff and churn it out. those guys okay, no manual makes sense.
but you can look at even GameFreak and Pokemon for a big name and realize their games carry a pretty thick 30-50 page manual. Atlus makes some of their games, don't make some others, but they too bust their asses when it comes to a good manual, with inklings of the character during the read. nobody cares about the generic manual that doesn't tell you anything - those guys do 2 page inserts or just make it digital. nobody's enjoyed those either. the ones people do like are the ones that actually have some heart in 'em.

Most manuals are poor - no big loss. A small percentage contain lots of detailed/interesting/amusing content, and they're the type that will still get created and packaged, long after EA or whoever has decided there's no point in them - because the people making them want to.
