The whole series is great, like I said, but the unabashed surrealism of the first two sequels is especially awesome in my opinion. In all fairness, though, I didn't like Pirates 3 nearly as much the first time I saw it; it's definitely a film that seems to benefit from repeat viewings.

"Fun" is the word I see thrown around to describe the Pirates sequels. It's also the word I see when people try to defend the Transformers sequels as good movies.

Pirates 3 is an ungodly catastrophe, but Pirates 2 has plenty of serious problems- most notably, the plot moves nowhere. Yes, we're introduced to a couple new characters and locales, but there's little substantial development, and the end of the second movie feels like the completion of a big loop back to square one. Also, the unbelievably good writing of Pirates 1 just... disappeared in the sequels.

Number 1 is by far the best. Number 2 is just okay.

Now, Number 3 is just way too long. There were multiple times when I thought the movie was over and then it just kept going.

Curse of the Black Pearl was one of my favorite movies of all time. In the sequels, the story and characters went down the tubes, and now it's all about fancy footwork and sword fights, with only the inherent awesomeness of Jack Sparrow keeping the sequels partially entertaining. But even Depp could not save the third movie from being unwatchable.

I hate the sequels of PotC for the same reason I hate The Matrix sequels: it has some pretty sweet action sequences, but it just seems like the parts in between the action is just convoluted nonsense trying to propel a story that seemed like it should've just stopped at the end of the first.

End of the day, I'm not a huge fan of any of the first three films and I haven't seen the fourth. But I found the second movie utterly, utterly bad whereas the third was a step up from that drivel but still not as good as the first.

Yeahhh, I know. I just have a really limited tolerance for a couple of things that held back the first film for me. Goofy antics are a major turn-off for me. Those two 'comic relief' pirates (one of them lost his eye or something and of course one was short and fat while the other was tall and skinny, etc.) had me yawning profusely every time they came on screen, for example.

All in all I'd still give "Curse of the Black Pearl" a solid 8 for what it was going for.

I think the goofy antics got a little more out of hand in the sequels, but I think Curse of the Black Pearl has a pretty great blend of "comedic stylings."
