Summer is my favourite time to read, and I don't think we've had this topic for quite some time. Sounds like the ideal condition to bring it back! There's probably a few people here building off the momentum they've gained reading the new George R.R Martin and are now looking to get some other recommendations, too. Oh, and like 3 people most likely just read Ender's Game. So, what've you got? Books, graphic novels, comics, visual novels? Whatever it is, spill it here!

I've just finished two books: Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore (re-read) and Wei Zhang's The Ancient Ship. I really enjoyed that Zhang book, so I might look into his other translated novel, September's Fables. Or maybe I won't -- who knows?! The Man Booker longlist just came out and Half Blood Blues sounds interesting, so I might just get that.

I wonder if either are at the library I'm in right now...

Quick check: nope! But there is a Wei-Bin Zhang who has a ton of economic textbooks on shelves.

Earthsea and I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would so far. Something about the writing style that I'm just not a big fan of and I haven't been able to pinpoint it yet but for the fact that I'm a big fan of banter and the actual dialogue is few and far between for huge sections of the series.

Star Trek Destiny Book I of III and it's good but not the stuff of legend that Trekkies proclaim it to be. Certainly one of TrekLit's better attempts at finding a reasonable means by which to link various iconic characters and casts together, at least. Decent science fiction premise and lots of Borg. I guess it's ultimately a winner but I don't know... I'm too spoiled by the various television series' finer hours and something about reading the exploits of Seven of Nine just isn't doing it for me as much as seeing them. Maybe it's the writer.

I've been re-reading Tad Williams' Otherland series bit by bit so I can be fully confident when I proclaim that it's my favorite book series. It's quite the slog early on though so it's taken me some time. Bit of a big hit for something I'd call "best I've read" but it really does get very good when it picks up. It's just causing me to take my damn sweet time.

Preparations are underway to finally begin The Dark Tower.

fantasy zone'd

the only Le Guin book I've read and enjoyed was Lavinia. I thought it was a neat take on a character from classic Roman poetry. It's on remainder tables everywhere I see, too, if you're interested. Otherland is good stuff. One of the few gargantuan series I enjoy.

Working through Windup Bird Chronicle with Callahan's Crosstime Saloon set up for next.

Also plan on rereading the entire Discworld series in order of release, up to Mort or Sourcery (I forget what's next after Equal Rites, I think it's Mort). Also need to get around to reading the young adult Discworld book too.

About halfway through Game of Thrones. I bought the first four so I have those to read after. I'm probably gonna sneak in the newest Sookie Stackhouse book after I finish Game of Thrones. That's about it!

Well, I recently read through The Death of WCW again, which is always a good read.

Honestly, I'm pretty pathetic when it comes to books; I read the same ones over and over again. My standard rotation is:

Jurassic Park
The Lost World
Hitchhiker's Guide books
I Am America (And So Can You)
The Death of WCW

Catching up on a bunch of stuff I've neglected this year. I find it extremely hard to read a book during the schoolyear because I can't focus directly on it.

Right now I'm reading The Two Towers, first time I've ever read The Lord of the Rings. Next up I'm reading 1984, then Frankenstein. After that is a book called Maze Runner a friend is begging me to read, then I'm going to read the George Martin "A Song of Ice And Fire" series, since I've heard nothing but great things about that.

I read Jurassic Park when I was five back in 1992. I begged and begged and begged my grandmother to purchase it for me but it took so much begging for her to relent because we were an incredibly poor family and she assumed I'd realize it had no pictures and put it down. Nope... I read that damn thing. I didn't get a lot of it but I got enough to stay entertained. First novel I ever read.

Kazbar, can you remind me on something concerning those two books? It's been ages since I've read The Lost World.

He basically went into a state of false death. He got better (save for a limp), and that's how he made it into the next one.

I got about two or three chapters into A Clash of Kings and haven't picked it up since, not that it was the books fault or anything. I get the feeling it's going to be even better than the first, I just have to find the time to sit down and read is all.

Yeah, it was kind of hokey, I'll admit, but I figure Crichton felt that with such a good character having been created, combined with the slight ambiguity of his death (They never declared him dead: one of the characters ask how he's doing on the way to the Raptor Nest, and the other shakes their head. It's quite possible he was in the same state he was throughout the whole second half of the book still), that it was worth bringing him back.

It's a fun book. Good for the summer, too. I'm not sure if it's "I have to recommend it at every chance" kind of good but I can't fault anyone for reading or enjoying it.

I should read some Agatha Christie one of these days.

Been reading quite a bit lately. Read the first four books of The Liebermann Papers; mystery series set in early 1900s Vienna around the time Freud was just introducing psychoanalysis to the world. Protagonists are a young Freud protege and his friend, a detective who often employs his assistance on cases. Really great series, perfect for the beach. First book is "A Death in Vienna"

After those I read Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven" - that was simultaneously frightening and infuriating. Great read, especially if you've ever read and enjoyed "In Cold Blood."

I'm now reading "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." Details how one of the most important cell lines in existence, responsible for numerous medical discoveries, was created under very questionable ethical circumstances. Just started it, fabulous so far.
