"when I was little I had a GBC game that felt a lot like pokemon (the sprites were similar?), but instead of catching monsters you had to make them agree to come with you when they appeared in random battles.

I don't know why I had to leave my home-town, but there's this dude who joins you and then a magical girl and sometime near the beginning you get this potion that heals (I think the dude), oh, and before you leave home your chased by your sister or something...

it was a swords and sorcery game, no face sprites that I can remember aside from the monsters in battle. I remember being frustrated about the lack of pictures for the main character.

There were several pokemon bootlegs released, one I played had you calling the pokemon (yes they have phones) and asking them to join you. You had to beat them first.
