Borders went out of business over a year ago. In this area, anyhow.

All the ones in my area liquidated right after the bankruptcy, surprised it took this long for this to be official.

Our local Borders is still open and going strong. I think they plan on being the first store to secede from a corporation and declare their independence.

Yeah, pretty much every Borders closed in this neck of the woods months ago.

Upside, I can raid the last remaining holdout for cheap novels now

I went into mine about two weeks ago and they had no signs of closing or anything. However, their store seemed a bit empty compared to how I remember it. Can't wait for some closing sales.

Our Borders has been doing good business, as near as I can tell. There are always people in there. I hope that once ours closes, B&N comes in and takes over the space.

So is this pretty much because of e-books, or what?

E-books, failure to expand their Internet business early enough, and the fact that B&N and Amazon have such a large market share that Borders couldn't keep up.

Some have closed, but it didn't become official nation wide until yesterday.

I've heard about this for a while now but the Borders here is still going strong, though they do seem to have a particularly large amount of clearance titles lately. Whatever, support local booksellers. They can often get you the exact same books you'd get at a Barnes & Noble for cheaper and with a personal touch that's leagues ahead of what the chains will give you.

Not surprising, I figured this would happen after the local one closed. I'll live with Barnes and Nobles, though.

That's too bad. I always thought they had a better selection than Barnes and Noble.

And it's not like there are any other booksellers nearby.

Kind of figured as much when the Borders in right off of Michigan Ave. in Chicago closed half a year ago.

I'm a bit surprised honestly, they always seemed to do fairly well. Though admittedly, it has been a while since I've gone into one.

Oh and the liquidation sales were terrible, imo.

Good. These brick and mortar stores are useless. Know how many times I've gone into a borders and they actually had what I was looking for? Zero. How many times has amazon had what I want? Every time. Same with circuit city, etc...I hope Best Buy and Gamestop are next. Amazon's always cheaper...

They have had what I wanted plenty of times, and they don't give a monopoly to a company where I have to wait for my product and pay extra.

I consistently find what I want on Amazon for less than I would at other retailers, and I don't have to drive downtown, wait in line, or deal with that other stuff to buy it.

Plus no sales tax, free shipping, etc.

Videogame stores brick and mortar can close.

Keep best buy open. Sometimes I need to grab **** in a pinch. Stuff breaks sometimes.

Also, I enjoy browsing occasionally, and for stuff like TVs and furniture I like to get a good luck at them before I buy them.

I have tons of books preordered on amazon for the rest of the year

so much more convient, except for dealing with paying use tax every few months for everything manually.

I so wish amazon would just charge sales tax instead of passing the tax responsibility off on their customers to make their prices look even cheaper. they are still the cheapest even after paying the use tax/sales tax!
