There's a news article here at work that lists her as the first Asian Disney Princess and my first thought was, "I don't think that's right."
Or maybe I'm remembering the movie wrong.

Oh boy here we go.

The Disney Princess franchise is an off-shoot of the Walt Disney Company, they market strong female leads as "Disney Princesses" and "Disney Heroines" and the Princess line has significantly more product.

A Disney Princess is defined by set standards, created by the Disney Princess franchise.

Such as: the character must be female, a main protagonist in their own movie, animated, humanoid, etc. etc. While most of the women in line up are royal by birth or marrige, royal blood is not a requirement for the franchise.

Mulan saved all of China, for example. She literally saved her entire country from the destruction of the Huns! For this she was uplifted with a high amount of honor and ranking; she wasnt inherently royalty in her blood, she was a common citizen, but her actions deemed her a noble character.

Tinker Belle was in the original nine Disney Princesses. Mostly because the franchise wanted to include her costume in the Bippidi Boppiti Boutique and group shots.

Currently the Disney Princess pantheon is made up of:

Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Merida, Rapunzel, Anna and Elsa.

Mulan (warrior), Elsa (queen), Pocahontas (Chief's daughter) "technically" Jasmine (Sultana) are not "Princesses" "in real life."

Disney Heroines are female charcters that don't meet the Disney Princess criteria; this includes women who do posess royal blood, such as: Kida, Eilonwy, Leia, Nala, Atta, and Melody. And those who don't such as: Wendy Darling, Alice, Esmerelda, and Lady.

Really it all just boils down to marketing and selling dresses, but it also is about honoring particular characters and the influence they have on public culture.
