Doing well

"Mario rpg is not selling well because it's turn based, it's selling well because of Mario"

"Pokemon is not selling well because of turn based, but because of the creature"(bruh it started as a turn based rpg and which of the countless other spin off did as well as the turn based ones"

"Baldur's gate 3 is not doing well because it's a turn based rpg, it's doing well because it's DND(as if Dnd was not a turn based rpg)"

"Infinite wealth is not doing well because it's a turn based rpg, it's doing well because it's Yakuza"
(The series used to have poor sales and now the two turn based ones are selling better)

"Persona 5 didn't do well because it's turn based, it's selling well because it's Persona"

But hasn't Persona always been a turn-based series

Also attributing the increase in sales here to the pivot to turn-based is a bit disingenuous; the series has been gradually growing in popularity and becoming more mainstream for years, and that combined with 7 being a great jumping on point probably contributed more to the increase than it being turn-based did.

Turn-based combat is extremely boring and hard to market as exciting, so a lot of people immediately write games off when they see footage and interpret it as "cycle through menus and spam one button until you win".

I'm really surprised more RPGs don't take the SMRPG/Mario & Luigi route and incorporate some timing-based element to make things feel more active.

Just because you find them boring does not mean everyone does. Although a lot of games could learn from Yakuza's animations though(it also got the timing based stuff as well)

The pokemon one makes perfect sense. The undisputed #1 draw of the series has always been kollect fighting pets based on whatever kriteria you choose. The rest are probably reaches.
