it is rolled up and heavily charred. So trying to unroll it would make the entire thing disintegrate. Somehow, AI was able to read the rolled up paper and figure out the heavily damaged letters. Turns out its writings of a previously little known philosopher because not much of his work survived to today. He says to relax and enjoy things in life.

Its basically just educated guesswork I assume. This is super great, but, in the end its a recreation based on tattered remains, its impossible to know now if its how it truly used to be

I read a different article on this and the first word the AI deciphered was "purple" and it went from there. I'd say it's definitely better than "educated guesswork."

Not sure. I'm still confused on how even AI can read it. I guess they had some way to look inside the roll

A different article explained that they scanned it with lasers to extract data at a molecular level (but they had to be careful that the lasers wouldn't damage it further) and scientists were able to tell what particles were papyrus and which were ink--which was made from carbon, and the whole thing was mostly carbon after being scorched by the volcano, but the ink had a different molecular makeup than the volcanic ash. Later, some twenty-year-old decided to pop the data in an AI algorithm and it started to come out with ancient Greek words

This is similar to the advice of the song of Seikilos, which is the oldest complete musical composition to have survived.

While you live, shine
have no grief at all
life exists only for a short while
and Time demands his due.

I don't think anyone was pushing for the outcome of a stanky old scroll that basically said "smoke weed everyday, chillax bro". So I'd say it was a job only AI could do if only because AI lacks free will for now and can be forced to do this.

This outcome is also more for the advancement of AI and the deciphering of the scroll is secondary.

It is not, no. It is underestimating just how utterly illegible a piece of charcoal is to think that a human could ever do it. Humans do not have the ability to parse what is there at all within our life times, this is just something absolutely beyond what any human would ever attempt. At best we can do what we did here: which is parse through a bunch of random data after AI has made it potentially legible.

Also, I do wonder if that be happy advice was as popular back then. It might seem like an obvious message today but 2000 years ago, I don't know if it was a popular philosophy. People were too obsessed with survival

I would say it is very relevant still:
In the deciphered text, Philodemus writes on pleasure, and whether the abundance of goods available can affect the amount of pleasure they give. As too in the case of food, we do not right away believe things that are scarce to be absolutely more pleasant than those which are abundant, the first sentence reads.

That is the kind of thing that is understood today, yes, but even then most people do not internalize it at all and sort of handwave it away whenever it is convenient. For instance, in the context of gaming one could easily point out that a major, if not the biggest, reason that people our age do not find games as fun is because there are so many more available options to the point that the highlights do not stick out as much due to just how many games are available. Inversely you could point out that games a while back were not actually as good as the nostalgia dictates and it's instead because they were the only options at all that they continue to be enshrined.
