How did it get as popular as it did?

Well, there's a guy named Freddy and you spend five nights at his place

streamers that were popular with children heavily broadcasted the games

also a significant portion of the fanbase wants to fuck and get fucked by the robots

it's probably one of those things that became popular due to streaming.

Timing.

There wasn't much like it at the time, it intersected nicely with the growing Youtuber movement and scarecam people overreacting to horror games.

It was well designed so pretty much anyone could play it and get some kind of experience out of it even if they sucked at it. Plus then it had the hidden lore that got peopel speculating. It just hit the perfect spot.

Plus the whole large vareity of weird large colorful characters is a beacon for fan-artists.

All the games were like $5 and it could run on shitty pre-built computers from 2008 and Markiplier and Pewdiepie played all of them while pretending to get scared.

Perfect place perfect time kind of thing

There are a lot of 12-year-olds in the world

Fear boners

The game is pretty fun with a very simple and creative premise. Unfortunately, the majority of the fanbase tends to be little kids and/or people who are really into the "lore" and the creator of FNAF was really smart to lean into it.

The first couple or so games had a lot of interesting lore that wasn't told directly and had a lot of mystery behind them.

Fuck mascot horror, really just bunch of toddlers with shitty taste

Does Markiplier get money from the movie? I feel like that guy basically by himself made this shit popular.

Playing the games myself I have no idea how they got so big other than that reason.

Emily Wants to Play could've just as easily gotten as big and I thought that game was a shitshow. Never did finish the end because of how anoying it gets.

Be totally still but make sure you get out of the room and look in a specific direction and if all 3 aren't done perfectly you fail. Probably even harder than that but its been like 4 years so I don't rtemember it all.

I don't see why unless he had something do with the promotion.

As far as I am aware the only FNAF property that directly gave Mark money was AR since he did commercials for it.

It's also a double edged sword. FNAF to this day is consistently Marks (non shorts) most popular videos. FNAF made Mark a ton of money as much as he made FNAF a ton of money. It's symbiotic.

Horror for kids.

Pretty much what other people said in that streamers/content creators made it popular.

It's kinda like what happened with Among Us, except Among Us was already out for like 2 years when it became popular, whereas FNAF was still new when Markiplier played it

If you skip to 6 minutes in there's a rundown of FNAF 1 which explains why it took off pretty well.

I like the idea of it and some of the games... FNAF: Help Wanted VR is one of my favorite VR games if not my absolute favorite...

Also besides that first trilogy of books they tried to make (which are awful)... The newer Fazbear Frights has some good stories in them...

Children love it.

i did like some of the lore and mysteries behind the series.

but yeah, the games themselves get boring quickly. only fucked with the first two anyway...

FNAF fans seem to have no context of what a Chuck E. Cheese or ShowBiz Pizza was actually like.

Those Chuck E. Cheese robots are fucking creepy.

Now, why it lasted this many games when theyre all basically the same game is beyond me.

Right time, right place. It's a simple, repetitive, jump-scare game practically designed for streamers that came out at a time when everyone was trying to copy the Pewdiepie / let's play model to make it big.

I don't know that it was specifically Sterling, but the first game came about because the dev had made a previous game which had animal characters that people criticized as being creepy looking. So the dev made a game in which he used creepy robot animals to give you a spookum.
