I'm actually pro-Palestine. I condemn Israel's decades of illegal occupation in that region.

Those are called taxes and they generally go to pay for public services, like roads, firefighters, libraries, and in most civilized countries healthcare.

Whether or not they're misused is another debate, but taxes are a necessity if you want any sort of infrastructure.

Politics as "team sports" is mostly harmless, until a soccer riot breaks out.

I'd say the biggest problem is the extremist stances some people, including some politicians, take; but the sports team mentality is definitely up there too.

You could have just said corruption and been done with it. Because the way you wrote that made you sound like a libertarian complaining about taxes.

The problem is that "politics" is used as a shield for anything people can "disagree" on. "Is climate change real?" Politics. "Did Donald Trump objectively do things that are against the laws as they are written?" Politics. "Do LGBTQ+ people even deserve to live?" Politics. As long as one side makes it "political" then apparently we all just have to go along with it and walk on eggshells talking about it because if you criticize people's "politics" you're inherently in the wrong for not just "respecting difference of opinion."

I would argue that the normalization of violence including actual war and murder is the worst thing about politics these days

My take, and I get flamed for it a lot here, is people's inability to recognize their "own party's" flaws, and instead brush it off with phrases as "Why would you complain about a small brush fire on one side of the fence when the entire forest is burning on the other side".

Well, you should still put in the effort to put the brush fire out.

Also the "You're either 100% in agreement or you're the enemy' mentality that a lot of people have when it comes to politics.

For example, I was told "I may as well be Pro-Life" becasue I felt the abortion laws that were in place prior to RvW being reversed were OK, and the counter was that since ANY sort of trimester limitations to elective abortions doesn't give women bodily autonomy, it wasn't Por-Choice.

Politics not being team sports goes both ways. You shouldn't want your side to win just because they're your side, and you shouldn't let bigots and fascists endanger people because "only focusing on the ones trying to kill you is team sports somehow!"

One of the biggest problems is all the money in politics. It was bad before but the Citizens United decision made it even worse. Even politicians that run for office with the best of intentions usually have to end up relying on corporate money because it's either that or lose the next election. And that's not even getting into all the money corporations put into lobbying.

Personally, I'm all for it. I'm not just pro-choice, I'm pro-abortion. I want more of them because overpopulation* is killing the environment.

*This is also a nuanced issue because overpopulation by itself is not a big deal. It's overpopulation with the amount of resources we consume per capita that's killing the world.
