It's a type of sea slug that is born with a brain, but loses it during its life cycle

It swims around in its youth and then finds a surface to cling to for the rest of its life and then it turns into more like a sea sponge. It no longer needs the brain so it's body absorbs it for nutrients

Kinda sounds horrific. They probably aren't very intelligent anyway, but just imagine feeling your brain dissolving

You could argue they hardly had consciousness to start.

Yeah, their "brain" is only needed for one purpose, to give them enough motor skills to attach to something for the rest of their lives. That's it.
