iirc a few u.s. states required many major porn websites to have an age verification system , so those sites decided to block access to those states that required it completely

By definition thatd be hard to enforce. And software companies use them professionally anyway so there will be pushback there.

It would be easy to ban. Any corporate VPN must be registered and have a government back door. Any others are banned.

Enforcing it would be hard though

I think is something that is quietly going to hurt them more. No Christian conservatives are gonna speak out against banning porn, but I guarantee a lot of them are affected already, not smart enough to use a VPN and are secretly mad over this.

Im gonna assume even if this did somehow become the case, police wouldnt spend much time on it. They have enough to do as it is. Imagine if they had to conduct the same type of raids they use to catch child porn on the tens, or maybe hundreds, of millions of people using regular porn? Never gonna happen. Its just not logistically possible.

It's never gonna happen, or at most there will be a couple of half-assed token measures implemented that will be easily circumvented.

Besides the fact that porn and sex work is exploitative to women (and is far too complex an issue to solve by just banning it), it's just virtue signalling.

They got their ass handed to them over attempts to outlaw encryption 3 decades ago, back when the internet was small enough to actually try.

If any of them dares try to pull that shit today there would be stadium-sized TVs in every city displaying realtime tickers of every porn site any politician or their lobbyists visit

It would be far easier to ban VPNs today. All they need to do is call it some shit like the "Anti-child sex trafficking bill" and they can do whatever they want and then say that any opposers to the bill are pro-child sex trafficking.

And the liberal media will continue not calling out the GOPs hypocrisy on that front.

The tories in the UK are trying something very similar to this right now with trying to ban end-to-end encryption, which would be horrible for our online infrastructure and economy if it passes.

The problem is they think theyre heroically protecting victimised babies. While simultaneously and with a straight face destroying all forms of maternal care post-birth and sex ed/birth control measures to prevent unwanted pregnancy in the first place.

Its a perfect cocktail of ignorance and self-righteousness.

As well as failing at trying to paint what they don't like as "child sex abuse."

If it was that easy they'd have already passed national bans on the LGBTQ community.

Tried to respond to this yesterday but I kept getting 502 errors.

This bill goes beyond just restricting/banning access to pornography. It would ban e2e encryption used by popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram. Even more extreme interpretations of the law could even be used to justify banning securing network traffic through HTTPS/SSL, which is every bit as stupid as it sounds.

anything could happen

ask someone in 1960, do you believe every 13 year old boy will have unfiltered access to pornographic photos and movies (let's not blow their mind with streaming yet) in the privacy of their bedroom?

I believe that's what good parenting is for. Remember when parents would actually intervene instead of begging the government to ban everything to make their role easier at the expense of everyone else?

ya, but neither good parents nor bad parents nor 13 year old kids nor pornographers in 1960 would have believed our current conditions to ever be possible in their wildest dreams.

reality turns out even wilder than that sometimes
