This. Im trying to train myself to have no opinion at all on topics outside my sphere of influence.

e.g. Capitalism, police accountability, the rich dodging taxes, what tax dollars are used for, climate change

Stressing over unchangeable things is needlessly taxing on my mental health. Far better off just learning not to care.

Only if they may also be used by the public.

As in, local kids teams can train there; people can use the gyms and the pools; the spaces may be used for public events; any sponsorship deals benefit the public funding body on a pro-rata basis. The funding body maintains a stake in the ownership and receives a share of any profits.

That kind of thing.

I remember when the city of Arlington used eminent domain to kick people out of their homes so they could build Cowboys Stadium.

If that had happened to me, I think I would have found Jerry Jones address and burned his fucking house down.

If its important infrastructure then options should be available, sure. But the government needs to heavily compensate you. The value of your property isnt enough. You might have to move out of the suburb entirely depending on the market, which can interfere with your job and other aspects of life.

Santa Clara County - which is very wealthy - gave some transportation money for the 49ers stadium. The Giants stadium was privately funded. The Warriors arena was privately financed. L.A.s Crypto, SoFi and the Clippers new arena are all privately funded. Dodger stadium was privately funded. SDs Petco is privately financed.

The Raiders and A's were on a 40+ year quest to get Oakland to bankroll a stadium for them. Californians generally don't do that. We don't need a sports team to "put us on the map". And there's tons to do year round otherwise.

Never really looked into it because I knew it wasn't happening. They'd probably want something in the neighborhood of SoFi stadium though, which cost $5.5B.

EDIT: The Chargers also carpetbagged from SD to L.A. because San Diego wouldn't build them a stadium. The Spanos family - which owns them - are notoriously known throughout SoCal as cheapskates.

I like some sports. I'm not against stadiums being a thing. But they should not be publicly funded. It serves no significant purpose for society and creates near endless problems.

The money in sports is a HUGE part ofwhat's killing America, its not just "I don't like it"

In that case I look at it as they don't want to move. Sucks for the city but the only choices there should be pay up or move the project. You're essentially forcing them from their home, they should be able to demand a payout.

There's an economics professor at IIRC North Carolina who has made a career on studying the economic impact of publicly financed stadiums worldwide and yeah, it's no bueno.

At best they break even. It seems, IMO to come down to some kind of low self esteem "civic pride" thing in order to "be on the map" that drives some places to fund these projects. And there are places funding stadiums every 10-15 years!
