I signed up for an instance in the UK so 95% of the people I interact with ended up being from that region. They aren't all on the same instance, but I seem to get my posts noticed more by instances in the region. I didn't intend on that happening when I signed up as I figured most people would ignore their local timelines if anything.

However, I imagine if you had an interest in another region... say Japan for the sake of realism given that we're on GameFAQs that you could probably sign up for an instance in Japan and network there with people that share your interests as long as you could communicate in the language. Just a thought.

The drawback of course is you're essentially targeting your interactions geographically depending on what instance you sign up for, even though you could technically interact with just about any instance of Mastodon. There's no wall preventing you from actually using it across geographical regions or anything but for reasons I don't understand (outside of the obvious local timeline) it seems to network you "more efficiently" in the region you sign up for?
