I was checking my local coinstar return tray at the store.

and, yeah. mixed in with a bunch of random Euro coins was an 1866 Shield Nickel.

This is the first 5 cent nickel ever made, being the first year of the first rendition of the 5 cent piece. they had 3 cent nickels before this and after this until the later 1800s. This particular one has a design with something akin to sun rays on the one side.

So, what is it worth? In its condition, the book says like $30-45 but a cursory ebay search seems to reveal the prices are lower. So maybe a $20 coin, I don't know. This could be a repunched date variety. When I get my loupe I will be able to see. This would add like 50% value to the coin.

I got this 1882 silver dollar back in 1998, and have carried it in my wallet ever since. The plan is to give it to my daughter one day, so shell have a chance to one day own a 200-year old coin.

its not worth a ton, but its been my lucky coin forever. I havent gotten struck by an asteroid or a train or anything. Sometimes I flip it to decide on meals when were out too.
