I want to make sure there's a significant amount of poetry in each year, so that they're accustomed to reading it. some possibilities off the top of my head: a bunch of Shakespeare's sonnets, some Maya Angelou, some Robert Frost, some Pablo Neruda, some Wordsworth (probably both William and Dorothy), some Langston Hughes, some Margaret Atwoood, some T.S. Eliot. might do Rime of the Ancient Mariner or one of the Canterbury Tales at some point. might also include more Canadian poets like A.M. Klein or George Eliott Clarke.

for short stories, I'm definitely doing Bloodflowers. I'd also consider more of a focus on Canadian authors, since that's one area in which Canada seems to excel. might read something from Dubliners as well

I want there to be some Shakespeare each year. a bunch of Sonnets might be enough for one year, but certainly all of his plays are on the table. lots of other options for plays too. I'd probably get them to read a play and then watch a film version of it. reading Flight Into Danger followed by watching Airplane! would be fun. other good options include Harvey and Rhinoceros.

I want there to be at least one graphic novel in the curriculum; probably Maus or Persepolis. might consider Ducks as well.

there are lots of novels I'd consider. I feel like 1984 is kinda standard, but I'd also probably include Brave New World and Jennifer Government as sort of alternatives. Gatsby and The Edible Woman are pretty quick reads. Fifth Business is kinda a quintessential Canadian novel. basically anything by Vonnegut is on the table. Fifteen Dogs is another good option.

I'd also like to make sure there's some non-fiction in the curriculum. some interesting articles and essays and such. maybe some Didion. also at least one biography or autobiography -- Malcolm X's and Maya Angelou's are the first ones that come to mind; though I guess Persepolis also sorta fits this part. good opportunity for discussion of subjectivity and how people choose which facts are being presented. His Way might also be a good one.
