I thought it was kinda funny upon first hearing about it. Now that I realized people's creativity with newly-added public domain characters is to just turn them into slasher villains, I can't say I'm too fond of it anymore.

They can't do anything like this with Mickey Mouse. The copyright is what expired for Winnie the Pooh books. But Mickey has a copyright that expires soon, but also a trademark over the image, and trademarks never expire. That means if the copyright lapses, the original 1920s cartoons can be profited from, but the depiction would still be trademark infringement if someone made their own Mickey media.

Of course, Disney also has a trademark over their likeness and designs of Winnie the Pooh characters, so this movie will have to be as far from their depiction as possible.
