President Michal D Higgins has called for homework to be banned.

The countrys favourite leader has given hope to a new generation of students that the bane of their afterschool evenings could be scrapped.

President Higgins argues that this would make time for young people to engage in more creative pursuits outside school hours.

The former Arts Minister believes that school activities should end at the school gate.

He was speaking to RTEs news2day current affairs and news programme for children on the occasion of the programmes 20th birthday.

When asked what his opinion of homework President Higgins said: I think myself, really that the time at home, and the time in the school is an educational experience and it should get finished at the school and people should be able to use their time for other creative things.

To mark the shows two decades on air, students from St Kevins National School, Littleton, County Tipperary put questions from RT news2day viewers to President Higgins at ras an Uachtarin.

There isn't enough time in the school day to cover all material. When is history or literature reading supposed to be completed?

Any job that insisted you do your work at home and bring it in the next morning, after you've already been there all day, would be brutally shit on.

Of course it should. The concept of homework doesnt make sense when you think about it. When I go home after work, I dont do any work related stuff until I come in the next day.

I have mixed feelings

On one hand homework doesn't really teach people much in terms of knowledge

On the other hand, it's practice for kids to learn about deadlines and time management and projects.

"Here's something you have to do, here's when it has to be done by, go do it" is absolutely vital life experience kids need to be prepared for.

I remember math homework taking up so much time. Every math teacher would give us page after page of shit to do and expect us to "show our work". It was especially frustrating when I had an afterschool job and the classes got more demanding.

Who the hell wants to come home from work then do 3 hours worth of math before going to sleep, plus whatever is given by other classes? I hated grade school more than any other point in my life so far.

Honestly? Yeah. Homework was always a source of stress and frustration. Sometimes you have none, sometimes every teacher assigns two big assignments "due at the end of the week" and your entire school week becomes hell.

School already takes up as much time as a full time job.

I never remember doing any homework, I don't think we got much if any during my schooling.

Only at University, did I actually start to get any work outside of the classroom and it was momentous compared to before.

Agree with homework being banned. Just means make your lessons as a teacher should be shorter and when it comes to test time make sure everyone is taking notes and told to study for the tests. Homework is a dumb concept considering usually the homework is based on what you learned in school that day and then you move on from it the next day lol. I'm not sure what the solution is for math though since math needs a lot of memorization.

Homework in college is completely BS though. So is the whole gen ed part of college.

I found it to be the opposite. We'd also have breaks between some classes in college to get things done and not have to worry about it later. Grade school was just back to back class after class with only a lunch break

Or, you do the instruction part, and assign a dozen or math problems for the second half of the class time, instead of a hundred to do at home.
That way, you're available to help, instead of just slapping red checkmarks on papers tomorrow.

Hmm... on the fence about this. I definitely think there should be limits to how much can be assigned, and absolutely a ban on issuing it over the school holidays, but I don't think an outright ban altogether is a great idea...

Homework should never have been a thing. At least not for students who were doing well. Otherwise it was just a colossal waste of time for most kids who should be enjoying their time off.

I meant more so for kids who fell behind in class work. Either due to illness, suspension or whatever.

The slower ones would either need special classes, after-school tutoring or weekend classes even.

Definitely think at LEAST elementary school aged kids shouldn't have homework. Probably middle school aged too. I remember in elementary getting yelled at so much for not doing homework or having it properly done. At that age who gives a damn? I just want to go home and play. Let kids spend their time finding hobbies and shit.
