I think I haven't submerged myself in a lake since the 90s maybe. I've kayaked but I dont let myself get into the water

Ever since news stories began of people getting "brain eating amoebas" I have been scared to actually swim.

Don't the brain eating amoebas only matter if you jump into the lake and the water goes deep up your nose?

I think the Kurzgesagt video claims this.

Yes, I have been swimming in lakes countless times and never got so much as an ear infection.

I have a friend that is deathly afraid of swimming in the ocean, though.

Not the lakes round here. When you see the amount of dead fish floating in them it puts you off a bit.

There are signs up around our lake that warn you against swimming in it. So I guess thats not trustworthy.

When I was a kid it was normal. As I got older I always avoided getting into lakes unless I was on a boat. Knowing how dirty they are and knowing I could encounter a snake or a snapping turtle was enough to convince me Im not swimming or stepping foot in one again lol.

I will still swim in cold, big lakes that are river fed.

I used to wake board and stuff here but since the lake is practically a big mud hole I don't anymore.

I swim in Lake Michigan a few dozen times every year. Smallest Lake Ive swum in was Lake Tahoe, so I cant speak for my interest in small forest lakes or the like.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Never cared for it --- warm all around, then you hit a cold pocket. Haven't swam in one for years... But there's a lake nearby where they release the hot water that cools a nearby coal plant. Water is HOT! but feels good. Probably not safe to swim in but did it a few times as a teenager.

Yeah, but i've generally been around pools and the ocean more than lakes, so haven't done it much.

your immune system would probably kill it pretty easily if that happened

but your nostrils are more vulnerable and closer to your brain

Yes, I love it.
Though I make it a point to know the water I am swimming in.

The lakes up here are cold straight into late August.
But I've learned to suck it up and just get in there.
