I think stylized depictions of smoking, especially in older films, does look - in your words - cool but having grown up in a household with a heavy smoker I can tell you its definitely anything but. Shit just doesn't ruin your lungs it ruins everything, stains the walls, coats your posessions, stinks up the place.

I know all of that is basically just successful advertising on their end, but it'd be real nice to be able to enjoy a nice smoke from time to time.

it does irk me tho how some people can smoke a whole pack a day. it's like they can't go on 5 minutes without a damn cig.

heck when i actually smoked tobbacco, i didn't go overboard with it. i mainly smoked when i went out with friends and stuff like that. lol

I guess thats why us 80s kids loved candy cigs so much and eventually ended up getting addicted to real ones.

The only reason you think it looks cool is the same reason most people think they need a diamond ring for their wedding/engagement....successful advertising. The only reason diamond rings are still popular while those cancer sticks arent is because one is very bad for your health.

Cigars are still cool though I don't smoke them anymore, well I did have one with a stranger outside the mall that unexpected. I had my headphones on (but not very loudly) and he was trying to get my attention. He wanted bus fare and then he was asking me what I was listening to and I said Bad Religion and he actually knew who they were. So we were talking about punk music. I wound up giving him 5 dollars and then he asked if I wanted to smoke a cigar with him haha this was in the summer.

Cigars can often smell nice even if they do coat your mouth sometimes badly there is still something fun about them, though I just stopped doing it for various reasons.

Quitting is one of the best things I've ever done.

I treat myself every year, buying things based on how much I've saved as a result of quitting. It's a nasty addiction, the smoke gets into your clothes and the residue on your hands, breath stinks, clothes stink from it.

As a smoker, you don't notice it, as a non-smoker now, I absolutely cannot stand cigarette smoke.

I'd made the move to a nictotine based e-cig during my first son's early years as a means to cut down (not buy fruity flavours and socialise), but a bad bronchial infection a couple of years into his life meant using it hurt my chest. Unable to kick the nicotine addiction, I moved back to cigarettes which funnily enough, weren't as harsh on my chest which makes no sense.

I ended up quiting after my youngest son was born, purely because I didn't like the fact that I needed to spray, potentially change some of my clothes and constantly wash my hands after a cigarette if I even wanted to hold or interact with my little lad. I also didn't want my boys growing up around smoking, the choice was ultimately for them and I'm glad I did it. The saving money is just a bonus.

I miss smoking cigs. I still do every once in a while when Im drunk but I havent actually bought any in over 2 years

Its nice for an oral/hand fixation + a little ritual to take a break from the world

But health issues aside, the stink just isnt worth it

Smoking never really did anything for me, but I smoked for years at an old job because only smokers got to take breaks and I wanted breaks too. When I got a new job, I continued smoking until I caught a cold and my throat hurt, so I quit cold turkey. It wasn't difficult and I can't say I really miss it.

Their best use is with drinks but for some reason I never care about that at home.

Most people in my city get dirty looks for smoking because most people dont. We have come close to having a city-wide evacuation for fires.

I hate when my tools are next to me and I use them by habit and immediately realize I didn't want the effect of them atm.

I thought it looked cool up until I learned how terrible it can be for your health. Ever since then, smokers just seemed weird to me.

Fictional smoking looks cool, but so does shooting up stuff with rocket launchers and walking away from the explosion while not looking at it, and I wouldn't want someone doing that anywhere near me in real life either.

I smoked for 20 years. It was not cool.

It only looks cool because of tobacco companies successfully inserting it into movies, having the cool people smoke, for long enough it became part of culture and perpetuated itself as a cool thing.

If we are being more charitable, its the reckless disregard for your own safety which is in fact cool, and thus if it wasnt bad for you it wouldnt be cool.

Its great for weight loss and mental health. Shame about the cancer, though.

yeah I always get cravings if I watch old movies or stuff set in the 80s-90s where they smoke all the time

Smokers are fucking nasty.

I smoked a pack a day for almost a decade and I wouldn't want to go back even if they made cigarettes healthy somehow. Clothes smelling like death, sense of smell and taste being numbed. No thanks.

Worst of all is the dependence itself. Constantly managing your time/breaks to make sure you don't go without for a couple of hours. The need to make sure you never run out of smokes. If I didn't have a cig with my coffee in the morning it would legit ruin my mood for the day.
