Bosses with invincibility phases that you have to wait out.

Also bosses where the boss itself isn't much of a threat but has a bunch of adds to cover up for that.

boss fights that you are supposed to fail in games that allow you to grind levels to such a degree that you can actually win the fight but then afterward it makes no difference and they win in a cutscene anyway

This is more a story than gameplay thing but any boss you lose to in the cutscene, even though you still had to beat them in the fight. Like if I'm gonna lose anyway just have it be an unwinnable fight than forcing me to put in effort for nothing.

Ones that require some mechanic that isn't even explained in the tutorials or able to be figured out through standard gameplay and the only way to know the mechanic exists is either look it up or maybe read the tutorial boxes in the menus but that give such a vague explanation you can't always make sense of it.

Blindsided is a mandatory mechanic to know in star ocean 4 and it never gets explained in the game unless you read all the tutorial logs.

Mega Man 2, despite being a pretty game, is egregiously guilty of this. It wouldn't be all that bad if Crash Bombs had more ammo, but if you beef a few bomb placements against Bue Beam Trap, well, hope you like grinding weapon energy!
The alien being vulnerable to just Bubble Lead is also a sick joke.
Of course, given the existence of the Yellow Devil in the first one, these kinds of puzzle bosses seem like an intentional design decision, but at least *that* can be killed with the buster. If you hate yourself.

Damage sponge bosses always fucking suck. A boss fight should be tense and dangerous: it shouldn't be learning a pattern and then repeating the same actions for 10-15 minutes. Once you've "solved" a boss, beating it should be a relatively painless process.

1) have no idea what theyre doing
2) always looking over your shoulder
3) changes things up that weve been doing for years
4) if it aint broke, break it
5) always calls you literally 5 times an hour and then when you stop answering and say youre not always at your desk they give you a cell phone so now theres no excuse to not answer
6) tells you to do something and then when you do it theyre like "who told you to do that"

Definitely flying bosses. Especially if they have multiple phases where they fly out of range for long periods of time.

Flying bosses are annoying, but burrowing bosses are worse. It's the same thing except you literally can't tell where they are and in some cases that's because they aren't anywhere until they appear directly under you in an attack. And if you have ranged attacks or aerial attacks then you can occasionally get some hits on bosses in the sky. Not so with diggy bois.

Also, bosses that require you to learn their patterns but they move too quickly and hit too hard for you to even learn anything when you lose.

Similar to what you describe. Sometimes it's not a flying bird, sometimes it's a guy who becomes invulnerable for a while. Sometimes the enemies that spawn in are so inconsequential it amounts to waiting.

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 they had these stipulations where villains would stop taking damage while talking, you'd have to keep fighting while a speech happened, often against multiple opponents ganging up on you. It sounds like a good challenge on paper but 2 v 1 was fucked up in that game. Resident Evil 6 makes it difficult to tell how much damage you're doing because there's a lack of feedback and there's parts where the fights go on hold because the boss needs to finish up an animation and change phase.

The obligatory interactive movie cinematic shit boss. You know the sort, western devs, extremely dumbed down gameplay, put presentation before gameplay or anything like that. Shit like Talbot at the end of Uncharted 3 or the angry army man at the end of Uncharted 2. CoD QTE final encounters. Lucien from Fable 2 should count for laughs.

QTE only bosses by far. There's nothing satisfying about watching the character do everything automatically by just pressing a button once in awhile. It's such a cop out as a developer.

Bosses that are overly reliant on status effects. Like, if the only reason the boss fight is hard is because you can't even move half the time because a coin flip said "fuck you".
