I have met a lot of CEOs in my line of work in the transportation industry and you would be surprised how dumb and stupid a lot of them are. Good portion of them were gifted their jobs.

Im convinced half of them would be working a menial, low paying job like delivering packages for Amazon if they didnt have the connections or contacts that they have.

it made me learn the hard way that merit and hard work dont take you very far if you dont know the right people

as someone who worked there at one point, most wal marts have almost no loss prevention. anyone that isn't a manager will get fired for approaching someone stealing stuff and doing anything more than watching them, and greeters can't do shit if you just ignore them

but the reason they can get away with that is they make an insane amount of money to negate what they lose from theft easily. what this sounds like is them throwing out a public facing excuse because they're about to start closing stores anyway

They're just blaming theft on stores they were planning to close anyway.

And maybe people wouldn't be stealing so much shit if they didn't go almost exclusively self-checkout.

They just write it off their taxes anyway. Nothing is actually lost.

They act like we shop at Wal-Mart because we love it and not because they pushed out most of the competition. Close those stores. Fuck em.

Do people think writing off taxes is magic? It means lost tax revenue for tax payers.

Probably perfecting their AI. They've been testing it for a few years in Long Island. There's a Walmart here where half the store is a giant computer system in the back that can monitor everything.

Tax money already doesn't really go to social programs that much. Very few of our tax dollars goes back to the people.

How exactly do our tax dollars benefit us? We have no universal healthcare, no free university, no pensions when we retire, and no safety nets if we cannot work.

Look at what happened in the pandemic. The government tried their hardest not to give the people any stimulus.

These problems and the wealth gap in this country are exactly why people steal.

they've got a pretty decent ml system behind the scenes paired with surveillance to detect criminal activity, but it seems they prefer to build cases over time rather than directly confront thieves.

I think the idea is the thefts will remain roughly the same while passing the loss onto customers that do pay.

This is why I always hated shoplifters who used the logic they wherent hurting anyone cause the corps could easily eat the cost

this is such bullshit. the reason theft is higher than its ever been is because stores are expected to run on skeleton crews now. back when i worked at my local Walmart in the electronics department, there was always a minimum of 3 associates in the department at almost all times, plus one or two for sporting goods and hardware each. every time i shop there these days, you are lucky if you come across ONE associate in the entire back end. customers who are thinking about stealing are more likely to do it if they don't see any associates around. simply having an associate or two in high theft risk departments is a deterrent to theft. but the execs want profit margins to be as high as possible, so they tell the store managers to hire as few people as possible so they can save money on payroll.

and even if they were allowed to Walmart would end up losing way more in lawsuits. I worked in a grocery store for a while and if someone tried to walk out with a cart full of stuff we were just supposed to let them leave and call the cops. We didnt even have security guards because its not worth the risk to try to save $200 worth of groceries when theyre moving 200k in a week anyway

I couldnt agree more. The best jobs typically go to the most undeserving, under qualified person whose parents played golf with the right people. Fuck connections and this entire system. We operate at diminishes capacity when we arent putting the best candidate in every position.

The short staffing trends need to stop. It is abusive to the worker, it gives the customer a horrible experience, and the only people to benefit are CEOs who dont actually do any work. They said wahh, nobody wants to work! when they had thirty people on payroll and corporate would only allow a skeleton crew to save money. The boomers bought it hook, line, and sinker, and its just now that theyre starting to realize that this was a corporate money grab the entire time.

If I saw someone stealing food, I wouldnt say a word to anyone. If they need it and the store decided to price gauge the item so they cant afford to buy it, then they should be able to take it.

Our federal budget is easily accessible, and the lions majority of it is dedicated to social program's. Idk why anyonentrues to claim otherwise.

We have section 8 housing, food stamps, shelters, food banks, unemployment pay, disability pay, social security, medicare/medicaid and countless other things.

As for retirement thats either on th individual or the goverment can enforce it the same same it's done in Singapore which should be the gold standard in my opinion.

Safeway is outrageously expensive compared to the competition and I dont know where they get off trying to compete with Whole Foods prices. If I was actually going to shoplift, it would be Safeway for many reasons (Im not going to because I dont want a petty theft charge at 34).

Biggest issues I think a lot of retail has is the fact that LP is so limited and most all companies dont want to be held liable for workers trying to stop shoplifters. Either from employees getting hurt or shoplifters suing for discrimination (when they are in the wrong)

Not to mention actual discrimination when the workers are in the right.
