I did in one of my runs in GSC. I was also a water starter guy though so it was Feraligatr for most of my playthrough's.

I had Totodile in Gold and Cyndaquil in Crystal, but by HeartGold I realized that Meganium was the coolest final form, so I picked the Chik then. Turns out Johto's gyms are unforgiving to grass types though. :/

I always go fire starter first, since those (at least in the games I've played) have been harder to find naturally. Maybe that's changed lately.

I switch up my starters

Yellow: ... Besides Pikachu, Charmander. I restarted this game like twice at least and kinda had them all in my team at some point.
Crystal: Cyndaquil
Platinum: Turtwig
Heart Gold: Chikorita. Feel like I had totodile like in my team at some point. Crystal or on HG.
Y: Froakie
Sword: Scorbunny
Arceus Legends: Rowlett
Scarlet: Pending. Haven't played for a week and stopped here I was gonna do the grass type cause I have friends who chose water and fire starters. I knew I wasn't gonna pick fire for sure..

Grass: 3
Fire: 3
Water: 2?

So I either pick grass or water. Water is actually more enticing now for me. I like it's ability

Pretty sure I picked chikorita my first play through on gold. I pretty much always go with grass, and then second would be water, never fire.. until litten.

There were way fewer Pokemon in that game so I was more willing to swap things up.
