I just went to NYC animecon and pulled out my old dusty Canon t3i with the lens that came with the kit. The pictures I took were not that great (not sharp)
I bought this back in 2014, barely used it because unfortunately I don't travel as often in the last 8 years (medical school and residency training sucked, no life whatsoever). Now that I have time, I want to go to more nerd conventions like comic con and PAX east.
My work buddy recommended looking into mirrorless cameras, like the sony a6000 kit. Is this good for me as a novice who is only interested in taking pictures and who does not know how to do post processing (I do want to learn though)?

He also said its not worth getting new lenses for the t3i because the body is so old and I haven't really built an ecosystem for it, but also had suggested 2 lenses that are under $200 which would work for me.

He had recommended that if I plan to go on vacation and do some outdoor shooting, to consider this as well:

Any recommendations below $1000 is appreciated. wat do

Look into Nikons.
Don't be afraid to start with something simple and then move up once you know you like the hobby.

Personally, haven't found mirrorless cameras to be that worthy of an investment.

Honestly just use your phone then crop/edit in GIMP if you want to jump into the hobby. A better camera is not going to get you better pictures.

You can make good shit with any camera.

You should be able to get a Panasonic g9 for at or under 1000, I recently made the jump in hardware after being into photography and editing (via camera phones), and got myself a G7 and love love love it

g9 is pretty much the same but with on board image stabilization which Im kicking myself for not having

also this, you can start learning post at any stage and any hardware, using Lightroom to work on your camera phone pictures will make you realize what is really done with hardware, and what is really done with a good eye and hood post skills

this is off of a Lumix g7 and a cheap kit lens

its hard to really show anything when you can make equally good content from an iPhone.

but if you ever need any help or guidance on post processing (either which programs to use for what, or actual workflow), feel free to hit me up

Im no expert but some people pay me to do this I guess

I would go with the Sony A7R II if your wallet can swing it. Imo nothing beats a dedicated camera with interchangeable lenses, especially at the learning stage.

So I decided to buy one of the used prime lens that I listed above just to check and try things out. Its cheap. I dont feel ready for a new camera yet especially when it still works and takes decent pictures.

Did you get the 50? Having your nifty fifty and learning to use it is a great start

I was thinking about the 24 for wider angle and for cool scenery pics for vacation. I don't need crazy zooms for figurines.

Go with what you feel, personally most of my pictures are taken with a 50 (25mm, but mirrorless), I do want a wider prime but most every picture is taken with my current one

A 50mm is going to be similar to what your eyes as a human see, so its good for everything and especially good fkr street photography
