Nah no way, capeshit aside every year recently has had lots of great films. A fun one I watched recently was Crimes of the Future. Has the dude who played Aragorn in LotR in it and that sexy lady who was Fragile in Death Stranding

Maybe if he made his movies less violent and more child friendly then more people would go see them. Stay mad old man

At this point I guess I can't blame dedicated auteurs for despising the MCU. I'd consider myself a fan, but I only really like / love 3-4 movies out of the entire thing; overall I just kinda marvel (pun intended) at the sheer overarching success and competency of it.

Yeah, it's weird that he tied this era with the 80s and the 50s, when the early 30s completely suppressed creativity.

At least Hollywood started getting its balls back in the 50s with Elia Kazan and Billy Wilder movies

Tarantino apparently really liked the recent Top Gun and West Side Story.

I think his gripe is less about his own movies and more about what hes seeing in the theaters, not only as a filmmaker but also as a lifelong movie fan.

There's nothing specifically bad about cape**** tho. The problem is now people refuse to provide real support to a movie unless it has well-known names attached (like Tarantino) or is from a pre-existing franchise, so they don't have to do any work deciding if they need to care about it or not.

Both the Screwball comedy and Noir thriller came to prominence while the Hays Code was in effect. I wouldn't say things were completely stifled with the studio system at its height and stars that we still regard today flourishing in spite of the restrictions. I think the Hays Code deserved the scrutiny of the time but this idea modern notion that it resulted in a Puritanical reinvention of Hollywood couldn't be further from the truth. FFS the "bombshell" and "beefcake" crazes began while the code was in effect lol

I think the real issue he and other similar complaints have is nothing to do with the MCU. The MCU is a symptom. Their real problem is streaming services. People aren't going to pay thirty bucks to go see a gripping historical drama, a gay romcom, or some brilliantly made auteur flick. I fucking love Pulp Fiction, but I'm not sure even it would fill seats at a theater nowadays.

People go to the theaters to see blockbusters. It just so happens that the MCU is the premier blockbuster franchise with just enough continuity to convince people to see them all.

He's right. Too many sequels, reboots, remakes, and fucking everything has to have a 'cinematic universe' now.

And China becoming a large part of the global box office is even worse since movies have to be non-threatening to a horrific authoritarian state.

Ehh, I do think going to the movies can be a fun social experience for people, depending on the movie and the friends or family you go with. Watching dinosaurs clash and roar in Jurassic Park on the big screen with a hundred other fans is always going to outdo watching it on your phone or even the living room TV.

The experience is nice on its own, if you need that sort of thing to fully enjoy something, but the social aspect is entirely doable without being around a bunch of strangers you are never going to interact with. If you're just going to kill time with friends and share an experience, you can stream. You want a more social experience you're not going to your run of the mill theater probably. The two circles kind of don't need to cross over for everyone, and I'm betting don't cross over for enough people to make sitting around randos a positive. I'll also add that if we go with the view that the majority of your movie goers are the MCU nerds...idk, maybe things have changed, but I'd rather my skull go through a windshield than vaguely associate with them, me personally.

Add atop the price of gas and inflation, it's probably easier to just stream and call it a day. Is it a lesser experience? Absolutely. Does everyone got time and money for that? idk, I'm betting no though.

I think most of these old directors are just really upset that famous directors aren't given this reverent status anymore. The MCU is an easy shorthand to condense a lot of cultural changes both within and without the industry. Inside the industry there's more corporate control of creatives, and with the general public stuff like MeToo has turned the wider culture against viewing directors as figures beyond reproach. Tarantino comes from an industry where Polanski and Woody Allen were still revered for decades after their crimes became public knowledge, just because they were "geniuses" and their art was considered so much more important than any personal failings. Nowadays most people don't care so much about the status and genius of directors, they're just like "give me a good movie or I'll watch something else on netflix".

That's also why these old directors like Cameron and Scorcese are so insistent that you have to see movies in the theater. Getting your films in the theater used to be a status symbol and a point of pride. It showed you were important. Now nobody cares whether a movie goes to theaters or streaming and the status symbol is worthless.
